Local attorney Ryan DeBoef chosen as Evangel’s 2012 Outstanding Young Alumnus

November 26, 2012 | Valorie Coleman

Humble and deferential are words that run contrary to many stereotypes of attorneys. But that is precisely why Ryan DeBoef was chosen to receive the 2012 Evangel Alumni Association  Outstanding Young Alumnus Award.

DeBoef currently serves as legal counsel for Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Previously, he served as senior associate attorney for Husch Blackwell LLP and as law clerk for the Honorable Richard E. Dorr of the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

DeBoef’s acceptance speech during homecoming was short and sweet. He deflected attention. He expressed his belief that he started out the race of life with an advantage because of his quality upbringing, the investment his parents and others have made in his life.

His focus is on giving back — on serving family, God and community. His passion is infectious.

Judge Dorr provided comments via video for the award ceremony.

“Ryan is one of those special people who come into your life, and you recognize early on this is a person you will never forget,” Dorr says. “One of Ryan’s favorite quotes is the one in Matthew that says, ‘Do to others what you would have them do to you.’ I can honestly say that Ryan lives his life in that manner.”

DeBoef earned a Bachelor of Science in Government from Evangel and went on to the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, where he graduated first in his class, receiving a juris doctorate in May 2005.

He has served with many professional and community service organizations, including the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the Network for Springfield’s Young Professionals, and on the board of directors for Leadership Springfield, an organization whose mission is to inspire, develop and connect leaders to serve in the Springfield community.

On receiving this award, DeBoef said, “I’m grateful. It’s a testament less to things I’ve done and more to the people who have taken the time to invest in my future.”
