Evangel University head men’s basketball coach Steve Jenkins won the 600th game of his college career on Thursday, December 9, 2014, as the Crusaders beat MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), 85-78, at the Ashcroft Center.

Evangel found themselves trailing 40-38 at halftime but started the second half with a 7-0 run to take a 45-40 lead. They went on to outscore the Pioneers 47-38 in the second half.

J.J. Williams led Evangel with 20 points and had 8 assists. Korry Tillery had 19 points and 10 rebounds while Brodie Wingert added 17 and Zack Kleine had 16. The Crusaders hit a season high 11 three-pointers going 11 for 23 from behind the arc.

MidAmerica Nazarene received 20 points from Brandon Newton while Luke Thomas had 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Jenkins, in his 32nd season as Evangel’s head coach, becomes just the seventh active coach in NAIA-I to reach 600 wins and is the 11th head coach to reach that total combing both NAIA divisions. He now has a career record of 600-407 with each of his 32 seasons at the college level spent at Evangel.

Evangel improved to 13-3 and 4-0 in the Heart of America conference. The Pioneers lost their fourth straight and dropped to 9-7 and 1-3.

Evangel plays at Graceland Saturday for a 4 p.m. game in Lamoni, Iowa.
