MOL vs MBA: What’s the Difference?

November 16, 2016 | EU Admissions

Are you looking at getting your MBA? Have you ever looked into an MOL? We’ve taken an in depth look at both. Check out the surprising similarities and difference.

Offered among Evangel University’s master’s degrees is the Master of Organizational Leadership (or MOL).

The MOL focuses on providing the theoretical and practical training to help professionals gain a better understanding of general business and non-profit business management functions. And it all happens in a convenient online learning format and cohort model.

MOL vs. MBA:

The Master’s of Organizational Leadership is comparable to a Master’s of Business Administration degree, with the key distinction that the MOL focuses more on the human side of business rather than the financial side of management. An MBA program emphasizes the profit-oriented business model with leadership decisions based on the financial results through case studies.

The MOL doesn’t ignore these aspects of management but puts more emphasis on the student’s current organizational context and how they can become a key player in making their organization more efficient and effective. It presents students with a framework for thinking about organizational systems and the principles of quality that have separated high performing organizations from low-performing ones for decades.

Research says that high-performance organizations are focusing more on the human element of leadership to go along with the financial aspects of running an organization. The MOL has also provided resources for many pastors and non-profit leaders who missed business and administrative training during their undergraduate studies. This blend brings business skills to those who are strong with people, and people skills to those who are strong with administration.

Pre-requisites

Many MBA programs require students to spend extra time and money on business prerequisites if they didn’t attain enough accounting, economics and information systems credits previously. Evangel’s MOL program introduces all of that coursework within the core track of the program, and endeavors to apply it to the leadership position the student is already in or aspires to.

“The MOL focuses on you and your contribution to building a high-performance organization no matter what your role might be,” says Dr. Duane Praschan, faculty member and coordinator of the MOL program. “This program is designed to develop leaders who possess Christian character, integrity and professional excellence.”
