Majors
Communication majors can earn a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree. The Department of Communication offers four majors:
-
Advertising/Public Relations is a major that studies all aspects of writing and mass media from the perspective of promotion and image marketing. Students learn about advertising campaigns, promotions, press relations, media distribution, and other creative services attributed to this area.
-
Electronic Media has three main areas of emphasis: broadcasting, multimedia and film. Students who choose an emphasis in broadcasting study the fields of radio and television. An emphasis in Multimedia concentrates on computer-mediated communication through Web site, CD-ROM, and DVD design and development. Film emphasis students learn about dramatic and documentary filmmaking. All Electronic Media majors learn the basics of audio, video, and multimedia production.
-
Communication Studies allows students a broader scope of all areas of communication. This major is ideal if you are interested in communication but want a more generalized degree, particularly if you desire to do graduate work in another related field such as advertising, public relations or law. Students are required to choose an advertising/public relations or speech track within the major.
-
Journalism provides guidance and practical experience in writing, editing, news reporting and design. Students also learn electronic methods of news distribution such as desktop publishing, broadcast, and Internet.
