Education Department: Program FAQ
1. Can I complete my program in four years?
The Education major requires 132 or more credit hours, depending on your specialty. Depending on how many courses you take each semester, you may complete your degree and certification in four years.
2. Will I have an advisor in the Education Department? Who will my advisor be?
If you are in the elementary, early childhood, middle school or special education program, you will have an advisor in the Education Department. Students in secondary content areas are advised by an advisor from their specific discipline.
3. What if I want to be involved in children's ministries at church?
Our elementary, early childhood and special education programs provide a rich preparation for children’s ministries. Opportunities for internships in churches, volunteer opportunities, and courses in theology support this ministry as well. Several of our recent graduates are involved in children’s ministries full time.
4. What if I want to teach overseas and/or in missions?
The Education Department offers a global internship program. During your junior year in the Education program, you will have the opportunity to complete an internship in a partner school overseas. Candidates must be approved by the Education Department following an application process.
5. What if I already have a bachelor’s degree, but no education coursework, and have decided I want to become a teacher?
A. If you want to be certified in a secondary subject area (biology, business, chemistry, theatre/speech, English, mathematics, unified science [biology], unified science [chemistry], social sciences, physical education, Spanish, French or art), you may obtain certification by enrolling in the Master of Secondary Teaching program (38-40 credits). You must also have a major in one of these disciplines, or equivalent coursework.
B. If you want to be certified in elementary, early childhood or special education, you can take a core of teaching courses for certification. You will have most of your general coursework done, based on your completed degree. Your advisor will guide you through the process.
