Sample of Classes
Art
- Drawing I introduces drawing, perspective, line,
shape, value, texture, and composition.
- Ceramics II introduces students to clay and glaze techniques designed to introduce wheel-throwing techniques in following semesters. The course emphasizes hand-building techniques and aesthetics of ceramic design.
- Painting III concentrates on developing imaginative resources in painting and emphasizes the student's individual stylistic strengths.
- Graphic Design IV examines specific problems relating to the student's primary area of interest: magazine layout, newspaper layout, corporate identity, or package design. Includes refinement of the portfolio in preparation for senior exhibition and a career in graphic design.
Drama
- Rehearsal and Performance provides the opportunity
for drama students to develop a character they will portray in an
upcoming main-stage performance.
- Play Production: Design Graphics gives practical experience in staging,
lighting, scene design, and costuming and is great for the student interested in producing school or church plays.
- Costume Design introduces the history of costume, the basics of design, and costume construction.
English
- Adolescent Literature familiarizes students with literature currently read by adolescent/young adults and how it represents
their cultural, physical, and ethnological diversity as well as a variety of adolescent/young adult concerns and values.
- Creative Writing develops imaginative
writing in poetry, fiction, and drama. Students submit
work to national publications.
- Teaching of Writing presents an opportunity for English majors to teach writing skills related to grammar, mechanics, and paragraph structure with emphasis on the academic essay.
Language Studies
- Elementary French studies the elements of French
grammar through oral and written exercises and introduces the student
to French culture and civilization.
- Spanish Conversation and Composition (conducted
in Spanish) explores Hispanic literature and culture in an effort
to help students master oral and written communication.
- Travel gives students an opportunity to be enriched linguistically and culturally through travel and study in a French- or Spanish-speaking country.
Humanities
- Introduction to Western Humanities explores historical contexts of ideas and their manifestations in literature, visual arts, and music.
- Introduction to Western Humanities II: Modern/Postmodern surveys trends shared by the Western humanities from Impressionism through postmodernism. This course encourages students to broaden their knowledge of Western cultural traditions and contemporary ideological currents.
