Pi Kappa Lambda

Research regarding the possibility of establishing an honor society for music majors and minors began in earnest in 1983-84. Pi Kappa Lambda’s high standards, national scope, outstanding reputation, and credibility made it the preferred choice. Evangel’s membership in the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) was a significant element in the approval of the application. Mrs. Lilias Circle at the national Pi Kappa Lambda office at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, proved to be an exceptional resource and help. After receiving and processing information about starting a chapter at Evangel, the appropriate forms were completed and returned. Evangel was approved in 1985. The Pi Kappa Lambda national president at that time was Dr. Robert Glidden, a well-known music administrator, NASM executive, and Dean of the School of Music at Florida State University. We were honored that he would personally come to the Evangel campus for the exciting inauguration ceremony of the Music Department’s Epsilon Psi chapter (1985). The official installation involved Dr. Robert Glidden, President Spence, and Chairman John Shows. Dr. Richard Honea has served as president of the Evangel chapter since its inception in 1985. I served as Secretary-Treasurer until 1991 when I left Evangel for an administrative position at Berean University. Dr. Linda Ligate has held the office since 1991. Every year a select few – music students, alumni, and occasionally a member of the faculty – who meet the high standards for this organization, are inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda. This is a credit, on student resumes, a “quality check” on an application for graduate school, and a recognition of musical excellence which can benefit them for many years.
