Music Financial Aid
Previous Page - Table of Contents - Next Page
In the first few years after Evangel was founded, there was very little structured financial assistance available to help students with educational expenses. Occasionally churches or individuals would designate a gift – money, an instrument, or some kind of tuition assistance. From these good-hearted expressions of people who desired to assist worthy students has come a broad spectrum of aid for which students can apply. Annually, $50,000 is awarded to A/G National Fine Arts Festival winners. Music students may also apply for monies awarded on the basis of demonstrated musicianship (by audition) and/or academic credentials (college GPA, high school grades, and ACT scores). These fall into three main categories: Music Performance Scholarships, Academic Department Scholarships (mainly for upper classmen), and Music Endowment Scholarships. Music students are, of course, eligible for a variety of scholarships, grants, loans, and employment available to any enrolled student (including federally-funded programs). All of these are administered by Evangel’s Office of Enrollment. All music scholarships are reassigned annually.
Music Endowment Scholarships have become an ever-growing category of assistance for music students. The gift of the estate of Pauline Chism to the Music Department in the Fall of 2001 (to be used for endowed music scholarships) is the largest gift of this type for the Evangel Music Department – $367,000.00. It is interesting that one of the often-repeated goals established by John Shows was “to see music endowment pass the $1,000,000 mark.” Under his leadership, the Lord’s help, and generous donors, this goal was reached just prior to his retirement in 2007.
Most of the named scholarships below are based on performance criteria in specifically-named performance skills. Normally awarded to seniors, juniors, and sophomores, public recognition is given in an annual awards ceremony.
