Recreation Program Reinstated

Starting with the 2004-05 school year, a major and minor in recreation was reinstated as an academic program. The first year began with 18 majors and ended with 4 first time graduates. The 2005-06 school year began with a total of 23 majors.

New courses added for this program include: Recreation in the Ozarks, Sophomore Seminar in Recreation, Recreation Leadership, Camp Leadership, Adapted Activities for Recreation, and Recreation Internship.

Graduates can qualify for positions in parks and recreation, YMCA’s, boy’s and girl’s clubs, country clubs, and facilities catering to retirees or the elderly. They would also be qualified to obtain jobs in state and national park settings, churches owning recreational facilities, campgrounds, etc. This program is a perfect compliment to a Biblical Studies degree, enabling the graduate to work as a youth or assistant pastor and director of church recreation.

All Recreation majors and minors are required to participate in the over night camping excursion which takes place during the fall semester. Activities include: hiking, fishing, canoeing, relationship and team building activities.

AAHPERD 2005 National Convention & Exposition

Four faculty members and seven physical education majors attended the 2005 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention and Exposition. This year’s convention was held April 12-16 in Chicago. Expenses for the trip were curtailed by a grant from Project Envision. This convention offers many seminar and workshop opportunities for students to acquire information relating to the fields of physical education and recreation. It also allows for dialogue with presenters, other professionals and with each other about current methods, trends, and issues related to the health, physical education, and recreation majors.
