Evangel University Pre-Nursing and Nursing Programs
Introduction
Evangel University offers a four-year nursing degree program in association with the Lester L. Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences. In this program, a BSN (bachelor’s of science in nursing) degree is awarded by Cox and Evangel awards a BS degree in Health Care. The BSN program is approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing (MSBN) and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. All nursing theory and clinical nursing courses are taught by Cox faculty in Cox Regional Health Center facilities.
What’s So Special About Evangel’s Nursing Program?
Students choose Evangel’s nursing program for a variety of reasons:
-
Evangel is an unashamedly Christian university as reflected by our theme “Christ is Lord.”
-
Evangel is widely recognized for it’s outstanding academic quality and emphasis on the integration of faith and learning. For example, each year both Cox and Evangel offer opportunities for nursing students to participate in week-long foreign medical missions trips.
-
This 4-year nursing program enables the student to graduate with two bachelor’s degrees (BS Nursing from Cox and BS Health Care from Evangel) in the same time normally required to earn one.
-
Evangel students have “preferred admission status” when they apply to Cox’s nursing program. This gives them a competitive advantage during the application process (transition from pre-nursing to nursing major).
-
This program makes the student eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) that allows the graduate to begin practicing as a registered nurse. The Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences has an excellent pass rate on this licensure exam to become a registered nurse.
Pre-nursing or Nursing?
All students entering Evangel University and planning to go into nursing as a profession start out as “pre-nursing” majors. After matriculation (admission) into the Cox nursing program, the student’s status will change from the pre-nursing major to nursing.
Admission into the Nursing Program
Although Evangel students are granted “preferred admission status” for entry into the Cox College nursing program, it is still competitive. In order to be eligible to apply for admission into the nursing program through Evangel University, the following conditions must be met by the pre-nursing student.
-
Submit application for admission to CCNHS as a general studies student (this is NOT the application for admission into the nursing program). By November 1 (Spring admission) or July 15 (Fall admission), submit the following through your advisor to Cox:
-
Cox College-Evangel University Application for Admission
-
$30 application fee
-
official copies of all transcripts (high school/GED and all colleges/universities attended)
-
ACT/SAT score reports
-
EU submits completed file (application; $30 fee; official transcripts, including EU; and ACT/SAT score reports) to Cox College (CCNHS).
-
Apply for matriculation into the nursing program by January 15.
-
To be considered for matriculation into the Entry Level BSN Program, Cox-Evangel students must:
-
Meet math proficiency requirement (see CCNHS catalog under admissions: math proficiency)
-
Complete 33 hours or more of the specified prerequisite courses
-
All must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
-
Obtain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better in these prerequisite courses
-
Top ranking candidates (determined by prerequisite course GPA) will receive program admission offers by certified mail.
Academic Registration, Financial Registration, Financial Aid
-
Academic Registration Procedures
-
When students register for classes at Evangel, they will indicate at that time the number of credits they will be taking at CCNHS during the same semester.
-
The student must meet with an Evangel advisor and a Cox advisor to determine which courses to take at each institution.
-
Cox courses will be entered into the EU registration software using the CCNHS course designations.
-
Financial Registration Procedures
-
Evangel students (prenursing and nursing) will pay all of their tuition and fees (for EU and Cox courses) to Evangel during financial registration.
-
EU students will pay the Evangel rate for tuition for courses taken, whether at EU or Cox College.
-
Evangel will then reimburse CCNHS for their portion (if any) of the tuition/fees for courses taken by EU students at Cox
-
Evangel students must pay the following fees directly to Cox, in addition to tuition and other fees charged by Evangel University
-
Books, lab materials, and other supplies purchased through the CCNHS bookstore
-
Students pay for their CCNHS textbooks
-
They may seek reimbursement from their financial aid account at EU if there is a surplus.
-
Vehicle Registration Fee ($10/yr)
-
Application Fee ($30)
-
Acceptance Fee ($100)
-
CCNHS will bill EU for Evangel student tuition and fees
-
EU will pay CCNHS the tuition and fee charges upon receipt of bills from CCNHS
-
Financial Aid/Scholarship General Information
-
Students in the EU/Cox cooperative nursing program need to meet with EU financial aid personnel as early before each semester as possible; don’t wait until the last minute!
-
EU/Cox students may apply for scholarships offered by either institution.
-
Some EU tuition discounts only apply to courses taken at EU (see the Financial Aid office for specifics)
-
NOTE: EU tuition discounts (e.g. MK, PK, employee) do not apply to courses taken by EU students at Cox; scholarships and other financial aid awards do.
-
If you wish to have financial aid cover expenses at both schools or if you need to have student loans deferred (due to dual enrollment) you must contact the financial aid office at EU to complete the necessary paperwork to facilitate a contractual agreement with COX to meet these needs.

Special Notes for Transfer Students:
Transfer Students and the EU/Cox College Nursing Program
Transferring classes from another college to the dual degree (BS in Health Care from EU; BS in Nursing from Cox College) nursing program at Evangel University is allowed but not recommended for the following reasons:
- The clinical nursing portion of the program involves 3 years (sophomore, junior, senior years) of coursework spread between the two universities.
- Application for matriculation (admission) is made on January 15 of the year during which the student wishes to be admitted into the nursing program (classes begin in the next Fall semester).
- In order to apply for admission to the nursing program, students must have attended EU for at least 1 semester prior. Since application is made in January, the normal semester of required attendance would be the previous Fall.
If a student is interested in taking some prerequisite courses at another college or university and transferring them to EU for the nursing program, they can do so. However, this would not reduce the four year curriculum requirement. For many students, this eliminates the advantages of transferring classes to EU for nursing.
