Where thoughts of the past meet ideas for the future

President Richard Nixon and Détente by Matthew Falch

The Watergate scandal is often the only thing that people remember from the Nixon presidency, but Nixon also played a key role in negotiations with the Soviet Union and the ensuing nuclear weapons treaties.  Falch examines how Nixon and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger negotiated with the Soviets during the era of Détente in addition to how Nixon used world events for his own political gain.

Matthew Falch graduated from Evangel University in 2009 with a degree in Social Studies Education. This paper was written for Dr. Luther Hall’s Historiography class in February of 2009. View PDF.

The Immigration Train: An Observation of Immigration Stages, Using Chinese Americans in California by Mandy Seielstad

Often referred to as a “melting pot,” the United States is a nation that represents many different ethnicities and races. Immigration has played a key role in the formation of the United States, and the State of California in particular has been shaped by Chinese immigrants. Seielstad presents a five-phase cyclical “Immigration Train” in order to trace the role of Chinese in California, in addition to how they were viewed, and in some cases oppressed, by the general public.

Mandy Seielstad completed her Pre-Law degree from Evangel University in 2008.  This paper was written for Seminar in History, taught by Dr. Luther Hall. View PDF.

Seay traces McVeigh’s path to Oklahoma City from his days in the military serving during the Gulf War and explains how the tragic events of the stand-offs at Ruby Ridge, Idaho and Waco, Texas fueled McVeigh’s hatred for the American government.

Slavery in Missouri by Virginia Dyer

The controversial issue of slavery tore America apart during the Civil War, and Missouri was no exception.  As the state which provoked the Missouri Compromise and played a key role in “Bleeding Kansas,” ideas about the ethics of slavery differed greatly among the citizens of Missouri. Virginia Dyer explores why the situation in Missouri was unique in comparison with other slave states and what can be learned from the stories of former slaves who lived in Missouri.

Virginia Dyer graduated from Evangel University with a bachelor’s degree in History in 2009.  While attending Evangel, Dyer served as the History Club President. This paper was written for Dr. Luther Hall’s Historiography class in March of 2009. View PDF.
