Questions about Legal Studies
You may have questions about the Legal Studies Program, below you'll find answers to some of students' most frequently asked questions.
Must I have a specific undergraduate major to attend law school?
No. However, Evangel University has chosen to place the Legal Studies Program under the supervision of the Social Science Department. Traditionally, students have gone on to law school after receiving a bachelor's degree in government. At the undergraduate level, the method of learning is as important as the substantive coursework. Law schools typically recommend courses that focus on verbal and written communication skills, analytical reasoning, logic, and related course work, which is covered in the Legal Studies Program.
How will I know what types of classes to take?
Upon acceptance to Evangel, each student is assigned an advisor. Dr. Bryan Sanders, department chair and an attorney licensed to practice law in two states, serves as advisor to students in the Legal Studies Program. The University has two attorneys on faculty, and course work is tailored to your individual career goals.
Are extracurricular activities important?
Yes. Although grades are very important for your successful application to law school, it is important that you present a balanced lifestyle. As a lawyer, you will be called on for leadership positions in the church, civic, and other organizations. Evangel provides leadership opportunities through the Pre-Law Society, student government, and other campus organizations. Students are also encouraged to become actively involved in one of the local churches. Participation in extracurricular activities enlarges your understanding of human nature and how to respond to individuals with compassion — skills needed by successful attorneys.
Can you guarantee that I will be accepted into law school?
Evangel has had great success in placing students into law schools. However, no school can guarantee that you will be accepted, because you are the only one who can know how hard you are willing to work to attain your goal. Evangel provides the tools and resources for your successful. The course of study, extracurricular activities, caring professors, and overall campus atmosphere are all designed to develop your potential. Only if you are willing to submit to a rigorous course of intellectual academic activity will you be able to know if you can succeed.
What if I choose not to go to law school?
Students who choose not to go to law school have become legal assistants or have gone into non-law-related fields. The Legal Studies Program prepares students to think for themselves and provides broad exposure to various academic fields and employment opportunities.
