Alumni Spotlight: Dr. George O. Wood ('62)

Dr. George O. Wood, an Evangel graduate in 1962, was elected the twelfth general superintendent at the Assemblies of God 52nd General Council on Aug. 9, 2007.
Dr. Wood has served as general secretary for the Fellowship since 1993, overseeing credentialing of ministers, church chartering and the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center. Dr. Wood replaced the Rev. Thomas E. Trask who stepped down during the middle of his four-year term; Trask had served in this position for 14 years. Dr. George O. Wood, an Evangel graduate in 1962, was elected the twelfth general superintendent at the Assemblies of God 52nd General Council on Aug. 9, 2007.
Dr. Wood has served as general secretary for the Fellowship since 1993, overseeing credentialing of ministers, church chartering and the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center. Dr. Wood replaces the Rev. Thomas E. Trask who stepped down during the middle of his four-year term; Trask had served in this position for 14 years. Needing a two-thirds majority, Wood was elected on the sixth electoral ballot, receiving 70 percent of the vote.

Dr. Wood is the first Evangel University graduate to hold the top position of our Fellowship,” said Dr. Robert H. Spence, president. “His competence and outstanding leadership at various levels of administrative responsibility would indicate a great future for him and the Church.”
The son of missionary parents to China and Tibet, Dr. Wood has a doctoral degree in pastoral theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., a juris doctorate from Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, Calif., and Bachelor of Arts degrees in history, religion and philosophy from Evangel.
Dr. Wood served as the assistant superintendent in the Southern California District Assemblies of God from 1988-93. He pastored Newport-Mesa Christian Center in Costa Mesa, Calif., for 17 years.
Dr. Wood has authored seven books. He is an attorney and member of the California State Bar.
His wife Jewel (Waite) graduated from Evangel in 1964.
