Hillary Medlin 2001
Major: Social Work
Occupation: Medical Social Worker
Hillary is currently working at Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mount Vernon, MO where she has been a social worker in the traumatic brain injury unit for the past 2 years. She works with patients and their families providing supportive counseling, assistance with medical and governmental paperwork, and discharge planning. Hillary states that every patient’s situation is different and provides a new set of challenges, making no two days the same.
Since graduating from Evangel in 2001, Hillary has attended graduate school at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, NY and obtained her Master’s degree in Social Work with an emphasis on church and community social work. During this time, Hillary had the opportunity to use the skills she gained at Evangel to work with the Salvation Army during the September 11 th World Trade Center disaster. Hillary provided case management and supportive counseling to victims, victim’s families, survivors, and displaced residents in New York City and the surrounding areas.
Hillary works with the youth at Joplin Family Worship Center and is the youth mission director. She also serves on the prayer team and has taught youth discipleship groups. Hillary has a passion for missions and has had the opportunity to take several mission trips to Brazil. She most recently organized and led a mission trip for her youth group to Brazil in June of 2004. Hillary knows that God is calling her to use her skills as a social worker and her passion for the Lord to reach the hurting internationally. She will be getting married and moving to the Amazon region of Brazil in the summer of 2005 to work as a missionary.
Evangel was a key building block for Hillary’s life and her future decisions. Hillary states, “Evangel held the keys to my future. It opened doors for me that I never dreamed possible. The professors at Evangel not only care about your academic performance, but you as a person. I learned more by observing their passion for truth, both academically and Biblically, than I could ever learn from a textbook”. Hillary continues to nurture the friendships she made at Evangel both personally and professionally. “As I look back over my years at Evangel, I realize that it not only prepared me for graduate school and eventually my profession, but it prepared me for a life of service to the Lord. That is something I would not trade for the world.”
