Jason Huneycutt ’02
Major: Music Education
Occupation: Choral Director, Nixa (Mo.) High School
In 2002, Jason Huneycutt graduated from Evangel University summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. He was hired by Nixa High School—located in one of the five fastest growing cities in Missouri—to serve as choral director for five choirs and teach three Music Appreciation classes.
“I will always be grateful for the impact Evangel has made and continues to make in my life,” Jason said. “Many of my professors in the music and education departments have been wonderful mentors to me during my first years as a new teacher.”
The training and education Jason received at Evangel have served him well, and now he is sharing that knowledge and expertise with his students. Although he is only in his fourth year of teaching, his choirs consistently receive “1” ratings at district and state music contests. In 2005 they received the prestigious Sweepstakes Trophy at the Worlds of Fun Festival of Choirs in Kansas City. His choirs have also been honored to perform in New York City’s Carnegie Hall, under the direction of John Rutter.
In 2005, Jason was named “Outstanding Beginning Teacher” by the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and was also a nominee for Nixa “Secondary Teacher of the Year.” He is included in the 2005-06 Who’s Who Among American Teachers and has been named to the 2007 Who’s Who in America.
Jason holds memberships in Alpha Chi, Pi Kappa Lambda, Music Educators National Conference, Missouri Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, Missouri Choral Directors Association, and Missouri State Teachers Association. He currently serves as vocal vice president of South Central Missouri Music Educators Association.
Jason resides in Springfield, Missouri, where he is actively involved at Central Assembly of God. He serves on the worship team, is a member of the sanctuary choir, and is often asked to be a soloist or guest conductor.
When asked his favorite memory of Evangel, Jason replied, “Evangel holds a special place in my heart. Not only did I receive a first rate education, but all of my closest friends were made during the four years I spent there. The bond between those of us who spent hours together on Concert Choir tours or just hanging out in the old Music Department lobby is one that will last from now to eternity. No matter how long it has been since I have seen them, it feels as if we start again right where we left off. I still keep in contact with those people to this day.”
Jason maintains strong ties to Evangel and is currently serving as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
“Evangel was a wonderful place for me, and I am always eager to share this with anyone who is willing to listen,” he said.
