With only months left until graduation, Leslie (Tate) Hubert began preparing for life after Evangel, and like many soon-to-be graduates, she wanted to have a plan in place.

In 2006, she was given the opportunity of a lifetime—to work under the most powerful man in the free world: President George W. Bush.

In 2005, Leslie traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in Evangel’s Washington Studies program offered by the social sciences department. While there, she began to see a future for herself in politics.

Shortly after returning from the trip, Leslie decided to apply for an internship at the White House.
“In the beginning, I didn't think I stood a chance. However, as the time for the application process for the internship drew near, my confidence level went up, and I completed the necessary steps,” Leslie said.

Early in December, Leslie received a phone call telling her that she had been chosen for a spring internship.

Leslie interned in the Executive Office of Presidential Correspondence. “I dealt with the mail mostly, but I also got to work with the comment line, proclamations and presidential photos,” she said. “Every day was different. I really didn't know what to expect when I walked into the doors of Presidential Correspondence.”

With the mail, Leslie read letters and entered profile information into a computer. She scanned the letters for pertinent information such as threats to the president or staff, letters that could not be replied to due to language or phrasing of the letter or any letters that contained information concerning other staff or politicians.

Leslie and other White House interns were able to volunteer for activities around the capital. She took part in the White House Easter Egg Roll, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and volunteered to hand out programs for the Garden Tours. Leslie was also able to attend presidential arrivals and departures, as well as the state arrival of Queen Elizabeth.

“I know for a fact that my experiences and education from Evangel prepared me for that job, and the task of representing myself and my brothers and sisters in Christ,” Leslie said.

Leslie now teaches high school level social studies in Suffolk, Va. She is putting her political ambitions on hold for a few years while her husband, Daniel Hubert, finishes law school.

Daniel is a 2006 graduate of Evangel and majored in government and public administration. He interned with the Honorable Samuel Der-Yeghiayan, an Evangel graduate, and is currently enrolled at Regent University in Virginia Beach.

“One of the things Leslie and I share is our interest in American History,” Daniel said. “Leslie and I fell in love during Professor Murphy's Colonial America class. She sat behind me and poked me with pens and pencils all semester.”

While a student at Evangel, Leslie worked in the social sciences department and the Academic Support Center. She was president of Pi Gamma Mu, Evangel’s chapter of the international honor society for social sciences and also initiated a new campus club called the Evangel Public Policy Awareness Committee.

Evangel continues to have a lasting effect on the couple even after life at the University.

“Professors are more than just teachers; they are friends who pour wisdom into our lives even after we've graduated. I think that's the legacy that Evangel can claim that no other schools can,” Daniel said.

“Evangel has prepared me in so many ways, not just in education, but spiritually as well,” Leslie said. “I don't feel that I am limited in what I can do because of the education I received and the relationships that I established with the professors and the students.”
