Scott
Metcalf
Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator
Scott Metcalf begins his sixth season in 2007 as the head football coach of the Crusader football team. Metcalf is a 1984 Evangel graduate and was a receiver on the 1980 team. He began coaching at Evangel in 1991 as a volunteer assistant coach and two years later, in 1993, Metcalf was named an assistant coach. He served in that capacity until Dec. 19, 2002, when he was introduced as EU’s fifth head football coach. The 2007 season will be Metcalf’s 18th with the Evangel football program as a player and coach.
Metcalf, 45, has accumulated a 31-22 record over the last five seasons. Two of those seasons - 2004 and 2006 - were marred by injuries to numerous starters and key backup players. Not counting the 2004 and 2006 campaigns, Metcalf has turned in a 23-10 record when his team has remained healthy.
During his first two seasons, Metcalf’s teams finished with an 8-2 record in 2002 and a 6-4 mark in 2003. The 2002 team was invited to the CMH Bowl after finishing second in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC). Metcalf’s third team, the 2004 Crusaders, experienced a rash of injuries. At the end of the season, nine starters were injured as were several key backups. The team finished 4-6 and three of the losses were by 10 points or less. In 2005, the team stayed healthy and finished 9-3 overall. The 2005 squad won the program’s fifth HAAC championship and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NAIA playoffs. Metcalf was honored with conference coach of the year honors in 2005. In 2006, the injury bug bit again and the team ended its season with a 4-6 mark. No less than 29 players were injured in 2006 - 12 starters and 17 backups.
Following his graduation from Evangel in 1984 (played on 1980 team), Metcalf assisted on Springfield’s Hillcrest High School football team from 1985-86. He then moved on to coach tight ends at Eastern Michigan University during the 1987 and 1988 seasons. The 1987 Eastern Michigan team won the Mid-America Conference championship and the California Raisin Bowl. Metcalf earned his master’s degree in 1989 from Eastern Michigan and then went to Urbana (Ohio) University. At Urbana, Metcalf was the offensive coordinator and coached the quarterbacks and receivers from 1989-90. He then returned to Springfield and coached receivers and tight ends at Hillcrest during the 1991 and 1992 seasons. In addition, Metcalf taught elementary physical education in the Springfield school system from 1991 through 1993.
Metcalf began coaching receivers at Evangel as a volunteer assistant during the 1991 and 1992 campaigns. He was a part-time assistant in 1993 and was then hired as a full-time assistant coach in 1994. By 1999 Metcalf had been elevated to the offensive coordinator position. Metcalf also served as the assistant track and field coach for seven seasons (1992-98). He was a featured speaker at the 1999 and 2002 Nike Coach-of-the-year Football Clinics in St. Louis. Metcalf also continues to improve himself professionally as he completed the Professional Development Series at the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA)/NCAA national convention the last eight years (1999-06). In addition, Metcalf has been a member of the American Football Coaches’ Association Division II All-America selection committee since 2004.
Starting with the 2006 season, the AFCA partnered with the NAIA and now coordinates the selection process for five all-America teams (NCAA IA, IAA, II, III and NAIA). Metcalf was a member of the inaugural AFCA/NAIA All-America Committee in 2006 and will continue his duties as a member of that committee in 2007. He was also a featured speaker at the University of Missouri Football Coaches Clinic in February of 2006.
As Evangel’s head coach, Metcalf’s players have won 93 All-Heart of America Athletic Conference honors, 41 All-America awards, and 13 NAIA Scholar-Athlete plaudits. Also, senior Jeremiah Hays won the prestigious 2006 Rimington Award, which is presented to the top offensive center in each of college football’s divisions.
During his tenure as the offensive coordinator (1999-03), four of Metcalf’s offenses rank among the top five all-time offenses at EU in total offensive yards per game. In addition, Metcalf’s 2002 and 2003 offensive units rank among the top three all-time offenses at Evangel in terms of offensive and passing yards per game.
Metcalf was born in upstate New York, but grew up in St. Louis and then moved to Ohio. He is a 1980 graduate of Sidney (Ohio) High School. A multi-sport standout, Metcalf earned three football letters, two track letters and a tennis letter as a high school athlete.
