In May of 2008 the Evangel University Football Team will travel to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to participate in an international football tournament played there. The team will participate in many activities of goodwill and relationship building with the football teams and university students in Bishkek the capital city of Kyrgyzstan.
In 1977 history was made when Evangel University fielded its first football team in a game against William Jewell. Thirty one years later the Evangel University football program will make history again as it travels to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to play exhibition games as part of an inaugural international American football tournament. Not only is this tournament a historical first for the county, but Evangel University will be the first American football to ever set foot in the country of Kyrgyzstan! In early May of 2008, players and coaches from Evangel University will embark on a historical experience as they participate in the countries first ever international football tournament. Evangel is expected to be the showcase of the tournament as they compete in two inter squad games during tournament play. Teams from Turkey, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazahstan are expected to play in the tournament sponsored by the Central Asian Association of American Football. Evangel University officials believe the trip will open doors for further development of programs in the Central Euro-Asia Region and will be a catalyst for potential student exchange programs, internship opportunities, and other untold new opportunities.
