Springfield, MO – Three Evangel athletes were named Heart of America Athletic Conference Player of the Week in their respective sports today.
Jackson Capel was named men’s basketball Player of the Week after averaging 33.5 points, 8 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in two games, both wins for Evangel last week. Capel had 31 in Evangel’s 81-68 win at Lindenwood Thursday. He followed that with a 36-point game against Baker on Saturday. Capel has topped 30 points in four straight games averaging 36 points per game during that stretch. The senior from Erlanger, Kentucky is the leading scorer in the NAIA-I averaging 25.3 points per game. It is the second time this season Capel has been honored by the league and fourth such award Evangel’s men’s team has won.
Whitney Pollard, a senior center from Springfield (Glendale H.S.) was the HAAC women’s basketball Player of the Week. Pollard averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and shot 65 percent from the floor in Evangel’s two games last week. Pollard was 8 for 10 from the floor and scored a season high 18 points in the Lady Crusaders 72-53 win at Lindenwood Thursday. She responded with 15 points and 8 boards in Evangel’s Saturday win at home over Baker. Pollard is the fourth different Lady Crusader to win the award from the league this season.
Kristin Ostrem was named the Athlete of the Week in women’s indoor track. Ostrem finished in second place in the mile run at the Mule Relays hosted by NCAA-II University of Central Missouri. Ostrem’s time of 5:27.98 was just three-tenths of a second off of the winning pace and set a school record. Ostrem is a freshman from Peterson, Minnesota.
