Crusaders Host Ottawa

Evangel hosts Ottawa in a doubleheader Wednesday. Evangel has lost their last two games having been swept by Kansas Wesleyan (14-8 and 7-3) on Friday. Saturday’s game was cancelled. Ottawa (Kan.) is 1-9 with their lone win against Mount Mercy (IA).

Wednesday's Starters

Chad Culpepper will start for the Crusaders on Wednesday…He will make his third start and is 1-0 with a 6.30 ERA and 12 strikeouts against 7 walks in 10 innings…Got the win in his last start on Feb. 17 at Williams Baptist: 6 inn, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 8 SO…Sophomore from Harrisonville, Mo….Was 4-4 with a 3.57 ERA last year.

Craig Penley will also make a start for Wednesday…He will make his second start and fourth appearance…Is 1-0 with a 9.45 ERA and has 7 strikeouts against 2 walks in 6.2 innings…Made relief appearance Friday against Kansas Wesleyan going 1.2 innings, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO…Last start was Feb. 14 at Hillsdale Bapt.: W, 4 inn, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO…Junior from Plato, Missouri…Was 0-1, 3 saves with a 3.14 ERA last season.

Friday

The Crusaders were swept by Kansas Wesleyan in a doubleheader on Friday. Saturday’s games were cancelled by snow. Evangel lost the first game 14-8. The Coyotes scored six runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to open up the lead. Andrew Rickman hit a grand slam in the sixth trying to keep Evangel close.

KWU took the second game 7-3. The Coyotes scored three runs in the first, but Evangel tied the game with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth. A 4-run sixth for KWU did in the Crusaders. Evangel stranded 9 men as they scored three runs on eight hits.

Hot Hitters

Zach Johnson has a six-game hitting streak and was 4 for 7 last Friday…Johnson has homered in two of his last three games and has 8 RBIs in his last three games…Andrew Rickman is 4 for 8 in his last three games and has a four-game hitting streak…Rickman leads the team in batting with a .438 average (7 for 16)…John Tollenaar has a six-game hitting streak.

Braves Notes

Ottawa was 15-29 last season and split a doubleheader against Evangel last year. Evangel won 7-4 in the first game and lost the second game 6-4 on Feb. 13 last year at Ottawa. Ottawa has only played one game on the road so far this season. This is the second HAAC opponent they have faced. The Braves lost to Avila 16-4 on Feb. 17.
