Evangel sweeps William Jewell in doubleheader

Springfield, Mo. — Evangel won the first game of the doubleheader against William Jewell 5-0. Kimberly Williams won her sixth straight start and worked a complete game, 6-hit shutout striking out three batters while walking one. The shutout is Williams second in a row after she blanked Central Methodist over 11 innings on Tuesday.

Evangel got on the board in the second inning on a RBI single by Kayla Spencer. The Lady Crusaders added two more runs in the fourth on a double-steal that scored Megan Cairns and an RBI hit by Marianna Nelson.

The Lady Crusaders added insurance runs in the sixth on a two-out pinch hit single by Andrea Jackson that drove in runners from second and third base.

Nelson went 2 for 3 with two runs an RBI and a steal, and Spencer ended the first game going 2 for 3 with an RBI, a double and a stolen base.

Springfield, Mo. — Evangel completed a sweep of William Jewell winning the second game of a doubleheader 3-2.

The Lady Crusaders rallied with a three-run sixth inning after trailing 2-0. Evangel got an RBI single from Marianna Nelson to pull to within a run. A sacrifice fly to right field by Kayla Spencer tied the game. Then, with two outs, Andrea Jackson singled up the middle to drive in the game-winning run.

Cara Bowling got the win in relief working the final two innings.

First baseman Megan Cairns went 3 for 3 with a double and scored the tying run in the sixth. Breanna Canclini was 2 for 3 and started the 3-run sixth inning with a lead-off single.

The sweep improves Evangel’s record to 21-9 and 6-1 in the conference. The Lady Cardinals dropped to 13-17 and 2-6 in the HAAC.

Evangel returns to action Saturday when they play a conference doubleheader at Baker.

Softball home
