Softball sweeps Benedictine 2-0 to advance to semifinals

Springfield, Mo. — Evangel won the first game of the best-of-three quarterfinal playoff series against Benedictine 11-8 winning in extra innings on a ninth-inning grand slam by Kendra Corbin.

Benedictine tied the game in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and then took the lead in the top of the ninth with two runs on RBI singles by Jennifer Bieberly and Allison Salva.

Trailing 8-6, Evangel started the bottom of the ninth with a single by Misty Robbins. Kasey Spencer followed with an RBI double that made it 8-7. Mariana Nelson followed with her fourth hit of the game to put two runners on base. Andrea Jackson then walked as a pinch hitter to load the bases. Then Corbin ended the game with a grand slam over the fence in the left field corner. The home run was her seventh of the year.

Corbin, a junior centerfielder from Andrews, Texas, went 3 for 6 in the game with a season high 5 RBIs and extended her hitting streak to 16 games in the win.

Springfield, Mo. — The Lady Crusaders advanced to the second round of the Heart of America conference softball playoffs with a 7-3 in game two of their quarterfinals series against Benedictine giving Evangel a 2-0 series sweep.

Evangel rallied from 3-2 behind with a 3-run sixth inning. Breanna Canclini started the inning with a double and pinch runner Traci Ragan later scored on a two-base throwing error by right fielder Drew Huff. Evangel posted four consecutive singles highlighted by RBI hits from Mariana Nelson and Elizabeth LeClaire.

Eight of Evangel’s nine starters got hits as Lady Crusaders starter Anna McKinny allowed just four hits in a complete game win. The sophomore from New Hampton, Missouri surrendered just three runs and two earned runs while walking two and striking out one. She retired the last 10 batters she faced.

Evangel will advance to the second round of the HAAC Playoffs and will host the winner of the Missouri Valley vs. MidAmerica Nazarene series. The best-of-three semifinal series will start Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Evangel University Softball / Baseball Complex.
