Fayette, Mo. — Evangel lost their opening game in the Heart of America conference baseball tournament 10-2 to top-seeded Lindenwood Friday.
The Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jason Cruise. Lindenwood responded with two runs in the top of the fifth when 3B Brandon Newton drove in two runs with two out on a hit that took a bad bounce over the head of shortstop Zach Farmer.
The Lions added two more runs the 7th then opened up with a lead with a 4-run ninth inning that featured back-to-back home runs.
Andrew Rickman went 2 for 3 at the plate for Evangel with a double and an RBI while Cruise went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
The loss puts Evangel in the loser’s bracket for a game at noon on Saturday, May 5.

Fayette, Mo. — William Jewell ended Evangel’s 2009 season and eliminated the Crusaders in the Heart of America conference tournament as the second-seeded Cardinals beat Evangel 5-3 Saturday.
William Jewell struck early with a two-run home run by Jon Ubbenga in the first inning. Evangel pulled to within a run in the third inning on an RBI ground ball by Eric Osner that scored Andrew Rickman.
The Cardinals added two runs in the bottom of the third on a ground ball, then a wild pitch by starter Chad Culpepper saw Ubbenga cross the plate from third base.
Evangel scored two runs in the fourth on RBI doubles by Phil Reed and Jason Cruise.
William Jewell added an insurance run in the eighth but Evangel stayed in the game as Crusaders pitching worked through trouble most of the afternoon setting up 14 runners left on base by the Cardinals.
Cruise ended with the game going 2 for 4 with two doubles and Andy Leingang went 2 for 2 with a sacrifice bunt.
The Crusaders ended their season with a record of 26-31 and qualified for their first postseason appearance in nine years.
