Springfield, Mo. — Scott Metcalf announced his resignation as Evangel University’s head football coach effective at the end of this season.

“During the last eight years the Lord has blessed me by allowing me to be the head football coach of a program that is dear to my heart,” said Metcalf. “In order for the program to move forward to that next level on the field of play, it is necessary that I step down as head football coach effective at the end of the season.”

Metcalf is in his 8th season as head coach at Evangel. His tenure is the second longest of any of the Crusaders five head coaches.  While Evangel has gone 1-6 so far this season and was 4-6 in 2008, Metcalf has a 42-40 career record as head coach. He led Evangel to a Heart of America conference championship in 2005 that saw the Crusaders finish 9-3 and advance to the national quarterfinals in the NAIA playoffs.

“I am deeply saddened that Scott was not able to experience greater success as our head coach,” said Dr. David Stair, Evangel University Athletics Director. “He has been a valuable member of our football family for many years and is a personal friend. Scott is a true gentleman and a credit to Evangel. He has coached our football program with dignity and class. My prayer is that God has great things in store for Scott and his family in the future.”

Prior to becoming head coach, Metcalf was offensive coordinator at Evangel from 1999-2001. He served as receivers coach starting in 1991 and continued coaching that position in addition to his other coaching duties throughout his career at Evangel. Metcalf also served Evangel as an assistant track coach from 1992-98. A 1984 Evangel graduate, Metcalf is in his 20th year with the university’s football program.

Evangel has three games remaining this season. The Crusaders play Avila University on Saturday in Kansas City at 1 p.m.

The search for Evangel University’s next head football coach will begin immediately. Those interested in being considered for the position should complete a faculty employment application form and e-mail it along with a letter of interest to Evangel Athletic Director, Dr. David Stair.
