Caitlin Russell Named HAAC Player of the Week

Springfield, MO – Evangel University women’s basketball forward Caitlin Russell was named Heart of America conference Player of the Week for her play in two games last week.

The 5-10 junior from Springfield-Hillcrest averaged 18 points, 5.5 rebounds and made 12 three-point shots in two games for Evangel last week.

Russell scored 18 points and had 8 rebounds in Evangel’s 61-57 win at William Jewell last Thursday. She made two free throws with 54 seconds remaining in that game that broke a 57-57 tie and put the Lady Crusaders ahead for good.

Russell then scored 19 points, including 16 in the second half, as Evangel won at home over Avila 52-50 on Saturday. Russell hit two three-point baskets in the final four minutes in that game that brought Evangel from six points behind.

The award marks the third different Evangel player to win conference player of the week honors. Kara Blankenship won the award Nov. 8-15 and Ashlee Luko won it Nov. 22-29. 

Evangel (15-4, 9-1) is in first place in the HAAC and is at Graceland for their next game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
