Little parts, big purpose
I had a little injury over the weekend.
It happened at one of the world's riskiest locations: the grocery store. I got crossways with a wooden pallet in the produce section and broke one toe and injured three others. After a day or so of pain, limping and wondering when it would start getting better instead of worse, we went to urgent care for an X-ray.
I left with a new shoe, a pair of crutches and wounded pride . I mean, who breaks a bone at the grocery store?
But my clumsiness is not the point of this blog entry. I mentioned to my husband this weekend that I couldn't believe how one broken toe could affect the rest of the body so significantly. One doesn't usually think about the usefulness of her toes; but when you have one that doesn't work it's almost impossible to walk. It reminded me how intricately God made us and designed every part to work together.
That got me thinking about the first time I moved in Walther Hall as an Evangel student 19 years ago. I have a strong memory of walking into that lobby for the first time and seeing the words of 1 Corinthians 12:12 spelled out in big bubble letters on the wall, "The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ."
The passage goes on to say, "If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body ... But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be?" (vs. 15; 18, 19)
It's such a perfect verse for Evangel University. Each "part" that makes up our student body is training for a specific cause in the body of Christ. Be it teacher, doctor, coach, reporter, lawyer, all the "parts" are needed to make the whole. As a liberal arts university, Evangel is not necessarily training most students for full-time ministry. What Evangel teaches is that whatever your passion or calling, it is an import function in the body of Christ.
As I am reminded how one small toe is critical to the body, I reflect on the bigger message: Whatever "part" you play in the body is critical. Evangel can prepare you to play that part just as you have been called.

Dennis Whaley passes away
Today is a sad day at Evangel.
Our friend and colleague, Dennis Whaley, passed away last night from complications related to heart surgery.
Read official statement from Evangel.
Read statement from Athletics department.
Dennis served as the director of university relations here at EU for the last nine years.
Anyone who knew Dennis knows how passionately he loved the Lord and the students of Evangel.
He will be greatly missed. I invite you to leave tributes or messages to the family here. They will be passed on to his wife, Teena, and daughter, Sara.
Comment from Caitlin Baker
I want to thank you Teena and Dennis for opening your home to my family and I when I was sick and in the hospital my freshman year at Evangel. My parents have never forgotten your generousness to us. I have so many great memories of Sunday night dinners at your place eating and hanging out with friends and our "family." Dennis, you will never be forgotten.
Comment from Zach Kidder
Dennis Whaley encouraged so many to let the Holy Spirit go before them and to pursue their hidden talents with that in mind. He blessed so many struggling students with his loving kindness and because of his authentic personality and lifestyle, so many have been strengthened. Thank you Dennis for being a father to me and so many!!! I love and miss you already!
Comment from Darla Kincaid (mother of Dana and Darci)
Our prayers will be with you in the coming difficult days. Dennis and your family have been a blessing to us. We are sad to lose a mighty leader in prayer. May our Comforter sustain you!!
Comment from Pam Gentleman
My son, Nick, went with the baseball team to Mexico this summer. What Dennis did to help those young men to have a great mission trip was unbelievable. The people's lives that was touched one day will see Dennis in heaven and will be able to tell him "Thank you". I know my son thought a lot of Dennis. Dennis is very lucky, he is standing in the presence of our Savior.
Comment from Kimberly Flick
I was so sad to hear this news! I met Dennis at the Freshman Welcome when my brother, Timothy Flick, started EU. He was a lovely man who radiated joy. You could instantly tell he loved his job and the students, new and returning. His presence will be missed but Heaven is a richer place!
Comment from Diane Hefta
Teena and Sara, Our deepest condolences!! Dennis' life shown forth as the light of the Lord and his passion for Evangel and his love for the students was always evident. Steve and I "thank you" for your mentoring and friendship of Erin and Erik while they were at Evangel. All our prayers and love, Steve and Diane Hefta (and Erin, Erik and Emily)
Comment from Faye Liddle
Teena and Sara: So very sad and devastated. Just talked with Dennis on Wednesday. You will be in our prayers and thoughts - trust you feel the Lord surrounding you with his love!
Comment from Robert and Mary Michaels
Dennis will be greatly missed. He was a wonderful friend, the ultimate neighbor, mentor to students and most importantly a fantastic Christ-follower. Our heart and prayers are with Teena and the family. He recently welcomed our AGFSA/Hillcrest graduates to the campus and made a lasting mark upon them. He has fought the good fight and leaves a lasting godly legacy.
Comment from Billie Davis
He was a dear friend and helper to me. I feel for his family and pray for God's comfort.
Comment from Catherine Mazanowicz
Dennis loved the students at Evangel so much! Whenever I visited Evangel, the campus was alive when Dennis was present on campus. The students would flock to him. They loved him so much! It was amazing to see. My prayers are not only with the Whaley family but the entire Evangel family as you face this new school year without him.
Comment from Don Twiford
I send my sincere regards to Teena and family as you suffer this loss. Blessings and strength.
Comment from Joe Benecasa
Dennis was a great friend who always looked out for the students at Evangel. He will be sorely missed at Evangel as well as at Central Assembly. Our prayers are with Teena and Sara as they go through this difficult time. He was a great example to us all and I will miss him dearly!
Dr. Mark Jones
i was the original music director for maranatha at southwestern (sagu) in the 70's. we traveled america and canada paving the way for many to follow in the ministry. dennis and tina loved their daughter and dennis was so proud of, and excited to have her and be her father. when she would succeed, he experienced it with her. dennis also constantly built tina up. dennis and tina changed the literal course of many people's lives by obeying God's calling for their lives..."make your calling sure"...dennis is now praising his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in person, in heaven-dennis you are hearing the words we all long to hear which are "well done good and faithfully servant" we love you and miss you dennis-to those who remain on this earth-make your calling sure and stay your course because it won't be long that you will follow-i love the whaley family
Comment from Matthew Letten
Dennis is my Mentor, and means so much to me, that I cannot put into words. I have known him since I was a little kid. During college he would sit with me countless times in his office or at dinner, and listen to me, and give me advice. He is the first person to lead me in the direction of going into the fitness business for myself. I owe more than I could ever repay to Mr. Whaley, and his family. Simply put, the best human being I have ever known.
Comment from Shirley Shedd
Teena and Sara--
How can we express how much Dennis meant to so many people? Yet I know the deepest loss is felt by you two and the rest of the family. May the Lord wrap His loving arms of comfort and grace around you, not only in the next few days but also in the weeks and months to come. The comfort is that anyone who knew Dennis has no question about where he is right now. We loved him, and continue to love you all.
Glenroy and Shirley Shedd
Comments from Steven and Laura Barnes
We pray for comfort and strength as you go through this loss. We loved Mr.Whaley and will always remember his smile the most. He always opened his house to the students at Evangel and we will always be grateful for his concern and open arms towards us. We love you guys so much and will continue to pray for your family.

Comment from Alan Jones
I am shocked and deeply grieved over Dennis passing away, yet I know that he is overjoyed to be with his Savior now. May God's peace be with you during this trying period. Dennis Whaley was a faithful servant of the King and a good witness to me and others.
Comment from Vernon and Donna Pianalto
Dennis was so nice to take time to get to know and encourage our son, Jeremy, during his freshman year. (He even did the same for us, as parents, when we would see him at the Blitz Club Burger Blasts and at Choir Concerts!) We felt like he went above the call of duty to show he cared. He set a wonderful example for all to follow! We pray that God's Word and the body of Christ will bring comfort and encouragement to all those who will miss him in the coming days and this school year!
Comment from Gary and Judy Oglesby
We have many fond memories of Dennis, while living in Springfield and attending Praise. Anyone who knew him loved him. He has such a sense of humor and was so gifted. Truly a servant who loved people. I had just spoken with him recently about some ideas he gave me. Our prayers are with you Teena and Sara.
Comment from David Stair
Dennis went with us on our baseball team's trip to Mexico in June. He was very instrumental in paving the way for us. I am grateful to have had this week with Dennis; it will always be one of my favorite memories.
Comments from Dale and Beth Jensen
Teena and family, we are praying for you as are so many others. May God so envelop you with His love that you will soon be able to rejoice with Dennis in his new home with the Lord. Your can rejoice in the knowledge that you will be reunited with Dennis in heaven one day.
Comment from Murl and Marlene Winters
We were shocked and surprised this morning to get the news of Dennis' passing. Both Marlene and I enjoyed getting to know both Dennis and Teena at Southwestern A/G University as he worked on the faculty. There he was especially known for his kind concern for others and his enthusiasm for life. He also enjoyed giving his personal testimony to others and to assuring them of the Lord's love and care. More recently we have enjoyed working at Evangel with Dennis and knowing of his continuing concern for others.
Comment from Renee Robertson
I was very saddened and my heart and prayers go out to the Whaley family and to the Evangel family. My son, Stephen was greatly helped by Dennis and I was so grateful that Dennis looked after him and so many students. I will miss joining with him in prayer. May the Comforter be present with you in this time of sorrow.
Comment from Brett and Amy (Szczepanik) Tracy
Dennis was a great friend! You are in our prayers. Dennis was a great support and amusing on the golf course! I will never forget the moments from eating dinner with you all to just sharing thoughts with Dennis.
Comment from Bob and Peggy Appel
We so enjoyed getting reacquainted with Dennis when we brought our daughter, Alana, to Evangel in 2005. Thank you, Teena, for so generously opening your home to Evangel students, and all you have done for us the last 5 years. Dennis will be greatly missed. We pray that the Lord will surround you, Teena and Sara, with His love.
Comment from Lauren Coager Simonetti
Dennis, your Evangel family will miss you dearly, but I'm sure the Lord is delighted to have such a wonderful man in his company. Thank you for sharing your life story in chapel and teaching me about God's incredible faithfulness. I'll never for get how God blessed you because in hearing your stories I have also been blessed.
Comment from Debi (Bali) Mogab
I have such wonderful memories of fun with Dennis. We were both "CAs" and went to South Texas camps, youth conventions, etc... together. I absolutely cannot think about Dennis without smiling. I was at SAGU (SAGC at the time) when the Teena and Dennis story all began back in the 71-72 school year. Teena, I will be holding you and your family up in prayer. Although the loss on this side of Glory is tremendous today, I'm sure Heaven is even more fun than ever with Dennis there.
Comment from Benjamin Elleson
Dennis Whaley can't be replaced. He was such a man of God and showed me the value of prayer. He blessed the lives of so many and always thought of others first. He taught what it meant to be a blessing and to love others as Christ loves us. I am truly blessed to know Dennis for the short time I did. Miss Teena and him will always remain in my heart.
Comment from Renee Tomkinson Davis
Dennis Whaley was one of a kind. Strong in the Lord and committed to Southwestern and its students. I traveled with Dennis and Teena in Maranatha 76-78. Dennis and Teena helped us grow up spiritually while we traveled the world. He helped us find our calling in this world. I have such great memories of the Maranatha family. God bless you Teena and Sara. You are in our prayers.
Comment from Maria Mazanowicz Raedeke
The first time I met Dennis at SAGU in 1977, I got a introduction to the "SAGU World according to Dennis Whaley". I was sold. Dennis was a very special man in so many wonderful ways that I can see why God took him home before his time for a special reason. Last night Dennis got promoted for a job well done. God's presence is with you Teena and Sara.
Comment from Dawna Vigil Lopez
What great memories we shared of our time at SAGU...then the fond remembrances of Pez. I am sure he was part of the welcoming committee to show you what we could not have imagined! Peace and Hugs to you Teena.
Comment from Diana Wickham
I am so sorry to hear about Dennis' passing. He was such a blessing to our family with his prayer emails and his passion for Evangel's Friends and Family. We pray for God's blessing and comfort over his family.
Comment from Bert and Stacy Capel
The conversations we had and the time we shared will always be remembered. Dennis had such a positive influence in the lives of students on campus and he will be greatly missed.
Pam Mannan Chambers
I join w/Dr. Mark Jones, as one of Dennis's original pioneer members to Maranatha Repertoire Co. Singers & Players. I loved Dennis, he was such a beloved friend and taught me about Jesus in ways I've carried throughout my life & ministry, pastoring & singing, he was always the GREAT Encourager! Thrilled for our sweet friend, sad for all of us, especially Teena & Sara, it will be sorely missed...but know this, his wonderful, God-ly legacy, will go on forever into eternity, PTL! Teena & Sara, my love & prayers are w/you, always, Pam
Comment from Ron Cleek
Dennis was a very good friend and he will be missed by all. But, I wish I had been there for the family because Dennis has a beautiful wife and daughter. May God bless both of them and the family.
Comment from Laurie Patton Glasson
Dennis served as a valuable member of the Springfield Missouri Complete Count Committee for the 2010 Census. His understanding of the community he served and his dedication to the future of Southwest Missouri made him a valuable member with a very strong voice that ensured everyone here counted. We were truly blessed to work with him and to have him as an advocate for our community. We will remember him for his dedication to Community. Our prayers are with his family.
Comment from Nancy Crockett
Teena, I am so sorry for your loss. I will always be grateful for the hospitality you & Dennis showed us Stephen's freshman year and for the friendship Dennis & Stephen shared. It was a blessing to me to know your family was there for him. My prayers are with you. May God's peace & love surround you and your family.
Comment from Kevin Rusenstrom
Dennis, Your kindness is missed already! Blessings to your loved ones.
Comment from Jonathan and Janet Faggart
Dennis represented the LORD and Evangel with passion and zeal. Our thoughts and prayers are with Teena and Sara and his Evangel family.
Comment from Marisa A. Di Tomassi
Teena, you were a blessing and soulmate to Dennis and he to you. A wonderful example of a Christian marriage. Sara, how excited your Dad was in all the preparations for your wedding. He marveled at the wonderful relationship that he established with his future son-in-law. Your father glowed walking you down the aisle. Dennis, my fellow classmate, I was privileged to graduate with you in 1974. Your kindness, gentle way and deep understanding were your hallmarks. You truly exemplified the fruits of the spirit and teachings of our Master. Thank you, Dear Friend!
Comment from Tim and Tammy Bailey
My heart aches for the loss your family has suffered. Dennis had become a very important person in the lives of our boys, Seth and Storm. You and Dennis opened your home to them for great food and fellowship, but most of all your hearts. Dennis quickly became a trusted friend to them. The boys admired him so much and looked to him for spiritual advice, career advice and yes...even girls! He truly invested himself in the lives of so many young people, at a time when they needed someone like him the most. He was a blessing from God and he will be missed beyond measure. We are praying daily for your family.
Comment from William Talty
Dennis Was a very interesting man, a man with many stories and much enthusiasm. I Loved every minute I worked with him. He knew how to speak blessings into me when I had doubts, how to rub my shoulders when I was stressed, and how to push me to strive, to not just be a diamond in the rough but how to polish my gifts and shine for God in a profitable way. I hope that I can grow into the man he prophesied I would become. I hope I can live with the fervor for God that he did. I hope That I can entertain, enlighten, and bless people the same way that he did. And I know he is up there collecting funds for the new heaven and new earth. I Love you Daddy D and I Will carry out God's will for my life and this Campus in the same spirit that you would have done. See you soon man.
Comment from Josue Santiago
I'm speechless and sad about what happened to my dear friend Dennis Whaley. I would not be where I am today if it was not for God bringing Dennis into my life. His friendship, prayers, guidance, and mentoring helped shape me into the man I am today. I'll never forget in 2001 when he approached me at my first chapel service at Evangel. He said "I'm an answer to your mom's prayer for someone to be there for you". He meant what he said and became an amazing friend. He took me to my first major league ball game with Mike and Juan. He always laughed telling the story of how I distracted Sammy Sosa at the ball game with my crazy cheering. When I needed someone to talk I could talk to Dennis and I always felt free to cry around him if I needed to. We had fun, Jeremy and I, going to Springfield ball games, going to the gym, and just talking, joking and enjoying life. He was like a childhood friend and one of the fellas with the fun we had but with his wisdom he was like a father as well. His friendship was the greatest blessing I recieved in all my years in Missouri. "It's allll goood" -Dennis Whaley
Comment from Beth Murphree
My thoughts and prayers are with you!
Comment from Robert Lamson
Dennis was a special friend during my time at Evangel and with the Maranatha Repertoire Company. We spent a lot of time rehearsing, laughing, and presenting the love of Christ through music and drama. It was always obvious to me how much Dennis loved God and loved people. He will be greatly missed; until we are all together again forever! Teena and Sara, you will be supported in prayer in the days, weeks, and months ahead.
Comment from Michelle Nunn
I interned for Dennis last semester, and he made a great impact on my life. He was always so encouraging towards me and made me feel as though I was going to be able to do something great. He's going to be missed so much by not only the Evangel family, but the entire Springfield community as well. He will always be remembered, and he left behind a legacy that will leave a lasting impact on all those who have had the privilege to meet him.
Comment from Fred and Julie Patterson
Day after day, the local newspaper prints accolades of all the worldly accomplishments someone left behind. There is seldom a single mention of the Giver of Life and why we are on this earth. Though Dennis' accomplishments would be just as grand, I will say just this: Dennis was a devoted bond-servant of Jesus Christ, and he lived his life in such a way as to bring glory to God. I know of no greater way to honor Dennis than to leave it at that, for all else pales in comparison.
Comment from Robert Lamson

My son, Dane Mohrmann, graduated from Evangel last May and during his tenure here went through some deep waters, spiritually and emotionally. Dennis was his prayer partner and confidant and as a parent 1200 miles away I am so grateful for a man like him, so caring and compassionate. Thank you Whaley family for sharing this great man with the students and their parents. I've been praying for you all as you move through this time.
Comment from Robby and Betty Jernigan
Dennis and Teena have been special friends for a long time - ever since Betty's days with them at SAGU. We honor Dennis for the caring, encouraging, motivating friend he has been to so many. Teena was the absolute match for him as they together served the Lord. His absence here on earth is tragic for all of us who love him. But, looking back, I do rejoice that the healing he received many years ago gave him time to see his beloved daughter grow up and marry. He was so proud of Sara & Jason both! And anyone who knows them, knows Teena was the love of his life! May the Lord's presence be especially real to you, Teena, and Sara and Jason. We love you!
Comment from Holly Bass
Dennis Whaley was a very kind, loving and passionate person. He was always so helpful when I worked in the Public Relations office or when I would interview him for The Lance. I knew that no matter how long I had been away from Evangel, Dennis would always remember my name when I came back to say hi. I am so sad for this loss, but know that one day we will all see him again.

Evangel welcomes 500 new students and parents to the family

I just came back from the opening session of EU Launch, where more than 500 new students officially began their college careers at Evangel University.
After a long, hot day of moving into the residence halls in the Missouri summer heat, the students and parents were excited to sit down in the air-conditioned Chapel and watch the show.
Moving-in day is always a great example of the sense of community that exists on our campus. Staff and faculty were invited to help students move in during the morning, and many did. It's a great feeling for new students and their parents when they are greeted in the parking lot by a member of the faculty or staff who gladly takes a box or two off their hands and escorts them to their residence hall.
When the vice president of student development is willing to trade in his tie for a T-shirt and help students move in on a 98-degree August day, you know you are in a place where the people really care about you.
Check out our moving-in day Photo Blog and check back here to see the amazing things that unfold for students over the course of the school year.

The new Krause Hall
Last Friday I had the chance to take a tour through the newly renovated Krause Hall. The paint is fresh. The furniture and carpet and even the window walls are new. The familiar, uh ... smells ... of the old Krause are gone, replaced with the smell of "new."
I walked through the empty halls and imagined the excitement that returning young men will have this weekend as they move into the remodeled rooms.
Our Krause Photo Blog chronicles the progress, from start to finish, of the million-dollar renovation. If you haven't seen it yet, you'll want to check it out.
Anyone care to take a guess as to when the old, familiar Krause smell will return?

A gem from Archives

I found a gem today while talking with Evangel's Archivist, Shirley Shedd. We're working on a new history project for the Web (coming soon!), and she showed me this photo.
This is Professor Emeritus Twila Edwards celebrating the official accreditation of Evangel in 1965. Edwards worked as a secretary at Evangel in the 1960s and joined the Theology faculty in 1971. She retired in 1999.

Quiet summer campus
I know summer is a fantastic time for students — home with family and friends, sleeping in, no classes or tests, sun and fun ... But frankly, it's a little sad and empty without them here on campus. A college campus without students is like a lamp without a light bulb. There's just no energy. Faculty and staff are all looking forward to August 20, when new students move in and the campus comes alive again.
But just because it's quiet out on the quad doesn't mean there's not a lot going on here at Evangel. While students are away, the staff is busy preparing for them to come back. Some of the busiest of those people serve on the EU Launch committee, a group I have been a part of this Spring.
EU Launch is our weeklong new student orientation. If you're already enrolled, chances are you've already checked out the schedule; but even if you're just considering Evangel, you should glance over the amazing week of activities that Evangel has planned to help students transition to college and get plugged into campus life. (Frankly, I'm just a little jealous that they didn't have EU Launch when I was a student!)
While we're busy planning EU Launch activities, there's another very busy group of people on campus — those remodeling Krause Hall from top to bottom. If you haven't seen the photos in a while, check them out at our Photo Blog, because we keep adding photos of the progress.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, and come back soon. We're almost ready for you.

Free custard for current students
Hey current students, how about a little free Andy's Frozen Custard?
We know you miss it when you go back home for the summer ... so we'd like to give you a chance to win a $25 gift card to use when you come back to see us in August. We're giving away three of them.
Why? Because we want to know how we can make our Web site better for you.
We sent all current students an e-mail about a quick survey. Just in case you missed that, you can access it here.
Your answers are anonymous and your name will not be connected with your survey answers. The Student Portal will record only that you completed the survey so that your name is included in the drawing.
Have a great summer!

Homecoming 2010 dates announced
Long before I came back to work at Evangel in 2008, I made an annual pilgrimage for Homecoming each fall (except the year I got married on Homecoming weekend ... I will admit that my wedding trumped the visit back to EU in 1996). Ok, Ok, so I never moved more than 20 minutes from Springfield, so it wasn't exactly a long trip. But, it was always a great opportunity to see old friends who do live much farther away and make it a point to travel back to Springfield for Homecoming.
Even those who live local don't find the time to come check out changes on campus very often. And if you haven't been back in a few years — they are pretty impressive. Homecoming is the perfect time to come check it out.
If you're an Evangel alum, you know that this place fosters friendships that last a lifetime. Reconnecting around the alma mater is a meaningful tradition for many of us.
That's why I'm glad to announce that the Homecoming 2010 schedule is now available online. Mark your calendars for October 14-16, 2010. It looks like it's going to be a fantastic weekend. What are you looking forward to doing and seeing while you're here?

2010/11 Founders Scholarship recipients named
Congratulations to Kaylyn Hicks and Lindsey Jackson, both incoming freshmen who were named this week as recipients of Evangel's full-tuition Founders Scholarship (the highest academic scholarship that Evangel awards).
Ten additional students were awarded half-tuition Founders Scholarships. See the press release for the full list of names, photos and more information about the winners.
The Founders Scholarship has been a great way for Evangel to attract and reward highly talented students who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to Christ and high academic achievement.
The scholarships were first offered in 2006, and the first class of Founders Scholars graduated last May. Read interviews with the inaugural class of Founders Scholars.

Another great day in Mexico!
Here's the final update from the Crusader baseball team in Mexico — sent in over the weekend. The team is back now, so check our site in a few days for a Photo Blog.
This morning we visited a boys' orphanage and played baseball with them. We also gave them each a baseball, glove, backpack, and autographed cards. The orphanage is run by a converted drug addict and it is really on a shoestring. The boys have all been abused or neglected and are essentially off the streets. The building was quite dirty and there were chickens running loose in the inside courtyard. The courtyard was only the size of some of our living rooms. The guys all said they would like to come back and try to do a service project to help improve the facility. Many of the players said visiting that orphanage was the most touching thin that we have done, We actually had to play with them on a dirt lot that didn't have a blade of grass anywhere. The temp was 90 degrees so it was very hot. But the kids were so starved for affection they didn't want us to leave!
During the afternoon we visited another orphanage that was better funded and had about 40 boys and girls. We simply took them to a city park and played with them. Again, the kids touched our players' hearts. As tired as our guys were, they stayed a long time signing everything from players' cards to gloves to t-shirts.
This evening several of our players went to a meeting of local Christian students while the rest of us were hosted for dinner at another Rotary Club. We were once again treated like royalty!
Another LONG day has come to an end. Tomorrow morning, we go to the market to shop and then to a free lunch before having the afternoon to chill out by the pool (finally!). Tomorrow night is the goodbye party and then we're home. The week has flown by and we have so many memories and have made so many friends. It's like all other missions trips that go well, if you haven't experienced the trip personally, it's impossible to know the feelings associated with coming home. There is the feeling of being anxious to get home; but there is also the tearing of leaving new friends and a work that is just getting started.
— Dr. David Stair

I just wanted to take the time and say thank you for posting the blogs on this trip. I truly enjoyed the updates. It was so nice to be able to keep up with what was going on. It just made me want to be there and be a part of it. Thank you so much!

Baseball team checks in from Mexico
The Crusader baseball team is currently playing and ministering in Tlaquepaque, Mexico — an invitation that came about because of the Sister City relationship between Springfield and Tlaquepaque. Read more about the trip.
We're hearing exciting things from Mexico, and I thought you'd enjoy reading updates from Evangel's director of athletics, Dr. David Stair. Here are his two most recent updates to the Evangel faculty and staff. I'll keep you posted here.

Greetings from TlaquepaqueSo far the trip has been awesome!! Our hotel is beautiful behind a very plain wall at street level. Our hosts have taken ten years to develop the property with an in ground pool, beautiful gardens, birds in cages, fountains, and local art. Everyone here has made us feel like family. The people in the baseball community said they couldn't believe it when they were told we were actually coming to their town!
So far we have held three clinics or camps for local players, ages from early teens to late twenties. It's a challenge to work with such a wide age group but our coaches and players have really come through and done a great job. Baseball here is like slow pitch softball in Springfield; they have over a hundred teams of all age groups. The fields are in constant use during the day because they don't have lights.
Yesterday morning we went to a middle school of 590 students and held a clinic and baseball demonstration in the courtyard. The guys were mobbed like celebs and really had fun!
Last night we played two different teams in five inning scrimmage games. The score was not that important but we won both, 7-3 and 8-2. Our guys are really tired and had not practiced in a month so it took most of the first game to get our bats going. In fact we scored all 7 runs in the last inning. There were several hundred people in the stands and the atmosphere was very festive! Our guys are mobbed wherever they go with kids to adults asking for autographs. I think coming back to Springfield will be a letdown for them in that respect. They are REALLY big stuff here!
Today we are conducting two more camps and playing two more 5 inning scrimmage games, each game against a different team. On Wednesday we will have a cultural experience that is still being worked out with our hosts... more about that another day. And we will again play baseball in the evening, possibly setting up an all-star game.
The city has a very active softball program and at least one really nice field. I think we could do exactly the same trip with our softball team. It would be an ideal situation in every way.
Our first night here we had a reception at the hotel with the local sister city, chamber of commerce, and Rotary club dignitaries and their spouses. It was very nice out by the pool.
Sunday morning we attended a local A/G church. It was a great experience for the guys! The service was in Spanish but they brought in an interpreter for the message. The worship included all stuff that we knew so we just sang along in English and it worked out fine. It was a very nice and very clean church. Missionary Steve Shoop and his wife were there and took us for a Chinese lunch after church. Steve has arranged for us to visit orphanages on Thursday and Friday.
At first we were not excited about the Chinese restaurant; but what we didn't know is that one of the Mexican Rotarians has a Chinese wife who is a WONDERFUL cook! After the meal, several of the guys said they would pay to fly back down here just to have her cook another meal for them! It was that good!! NOTHING like it in Springfield!
Having the sister city connections has been a huge plus. Some of the people have visited Springfield so they are very excited to have us here. They hope we will bring other teams down to do similar camps, etc.
Chad Gehring has done an awesome job once again in planning for this trip. I feel like the Lord has given him the gift of organization in the way he is able to foresee and plan for every eventuality in a trip like this! He has also packed T-shirts, backpacks, children's Bibles in Spanish, baseballs to sign, etc., so we have lots of "stuff" to give out to the kids at our camps and at the orphanages.

Incredible experiencesWow! Another absolutely incredible two days! Tuesday morning someone brought a bus load of kids to our morning camp at the ball park. The guys work so well with the kids at these camps!
The two scrimmage games were very fun. For the first game we mixed our players with the players from another team and had a very close game with both teams really getting into it. Evangel won the second game which was against another of the teams that we were slated to play. Last night we won the first game handily and lost the second by one run due to an abbreviated game called because of darkness. Each night, between games, our players and coaches meet with the players and coaches of the other two teams and one of our players gives a short testimony. We then present two bats to the host coaches.
Chad Gehring has prepared us with baseball cards of our players so they can pass them out to kids and adults to be autographed. The cards are printed with a scripture on the back. We also have backpacks to give away and autograph along with t-shirts for friends who are helping us. The people here are incredible! One man has provided us with iced down Gatorade for each game which is a real blessing because the days are so hot. The people just mob our players wherever they go but especially after games. We literally have to push our way through the crowd when we are trying to leave the stadium. Our guys are very tired at the end of the day but still try to stay around to interact with the people as long as possible.
We have had untold numbers of people thank us for coming to Mexico. Many have told us of the impact our team has had on the area. We are seeing people coming to a relationship with the Lord through our witness this week. I wish I had the time to give examples here!!
Games aside, yesterday was incredible!!! I'm sure we were the first American baseball team to fight the bulls. You read correctly! Our hosts rented a bull ring, hired two matadors for the morning, and taught us how to bullfight! Now these were not the 1,000 pound bulls you see at a normal bullfight; they were only about 300 pounds but they had horns!!! We took lots of video as most of the guys gave it a try. It was hilarious watching some of them run faster than they have ever run on the base paths! And it was amazing to see how fast they could clear the wall when the bull was on their heels!! Some actually did very well. No, we didn't have swords and didn't hurt any bulls!
Last night after the games, we were guests of famous Mexican artist Paco Pidia for dinner at his home. His wife fixed us traditional Mexican food and he entertained us by singing some
Mexican songs. He has a beautiful 100 year old home in the center of town and was very warm to all of us. We still can't get used to eating the evening meal at 10:00pm!!
Dennis and I were guests of a local Rotary club for lunch yesterday and were treated royally with gifts and very nice speeches. The way people are treating us all, why would we want to come home????? (.just kidding). But this is a VERY warm and friendly place and very safe. And we have made so many very good friends. I would like to see others of our teams come here in the future. I know our baseball team wants to come back.
Today we will go to two orphanages to conduct clinics and give out Spanish children's Bibles. We will then be guests of another Rotary club for dinner this evening as a team. Tomorrow we go to the huge outdoor market for shopping and then down time before leaving for home early Saturday morning.
Thank you all for praying for us; this has been another one of those trips of a lifetime that we hope to have all of our athletes' experience. We are all coming home changed men. You would be very proud of the guys on our team and the coaches in the way they have given so unselfishly of themselves all day every day!!!! Our athletes and coaches at Evangel are the best!!!!
God bless!!
