Student handbook table of contents - Sections V-VII
Becoming a part of the Evangel University family will mean new opportunities to grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Some of these experiences will represent significant challenges.
Through the years, I have come to appreciate the importance of students making wise decisions regarding not only their courses of study, but also their expenditure of time. A successful university career will depend on wise choices.
Our faculty and staff are available to help you in determining and discerning God’s will for your life. We want your time on the Evangel campus to provide some of your most treasured memories. My personal goal is to help you in every way that I can.
Dr. Robert H. Spence
Welcome to Evangel University! I am glad that you have chosen to prepare for your life’s vocation by pursuing higher education at Evangel. I believe God has chosen you to be here as part of His plan to develop you into a leader who will influence your world for God and for good.
Living in a Christian community like Evangel can greatly facilitate your personal growth and development into such a leader. One significant step of maturity you will experience is moving from dependence to interdependence. This requires careful obedience to Jesus’ command, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).
Please take time to read this Student Handbook. This information will be helpful to you in taking advantage of the many services and opportunities available to maximize your University experience. Additionally, as an Evangel University student, you are responsible for knowing and following the policies contained in the Student Handbook. These policies have been formulated to help the members of the University community uphold biblical principles of conduct, foster considerate community interaction, and develop discipline in daily Christian living.
Dr. David R. Bundrick
Our Distinction
Evangel is the national Assemblies of God University of arts, sciences and professions. Evangel offers associate of arts, baccalaureate and master’s degrees and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, National Association of Schools of Music and Council for Social Work Education.
Our Mission
The mission of Evangel University is to provide opportunities for Assemblies of God individuals to develop academically and intellectually in an accredited Christian liberal arts educational program; and to inspire these individuals in a Pentecostal environment to develop spiritually, emotionally and culturally in order to serve God and their fellow man in their chosen careers.
Our Vision
Evangel University, throughout its history, has been dedicated to providing the best in higher education for its students. The University vision has always been to equip our students for a place of service in fulfilling God’s calling for their lives. We reaffirm our vision through the following statements:
Our Values
Our Vision For Developing Students
The vision for student development at Evangel University is that all students will be in the process of becoming mature and competent Spirit-empowered change agents for the Kingdom of God in those areas of life (such as their family, church, community and professional environments) where their Evangel education will afford them the opportunity to have significant influence.
Objectives - All students will experience growth in the seven dimensions of development emphasized at Evangel: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, physical, vocational and cultural. As a result of the positive environment of an integrative Christian university, students will develop spiritually, gaining greater awareness of their significance in Christ and increasing in their commitment to serve Him. Socially students will grow in their relationships with others in the Christian community and in surrounding cultures. Individually they will mature in personal discipline and Christian character.
Strategies - To accomplish these objectives, the Division of Student Development will strive to provide a context of encouragement and accountability for all students’ multidimensional development. Means by which this will be accomplished include:
Results - As a result of implementing these objectives and strategies, the student body will mature spiritually and socially, becoming increasingly capable of responsible, Christian personal and group living. Students will become competent in leadership, caring enough to facilitate the growth of others. Alumni will reflect positively on their undergraduate experience, demonstrate continuing loyalty to the institution and positively influence the world through the power of the Spirit, the example of their own Christian character and the excellence of their professional performance.

This growth is facilitated by a mature Christian believer (faculty or staff) who will communicate with the student confidentially about his/her areas of interest and concern and will set an example of Christian maturity. The mentoring relationship is typically informal and initiated by the student. believer (faculty or staff) who will communicate with the student confidentially about his/her areas of interest and concern and will set an example of Christian maturity.

No publicity is to be posted in the Residence Halls except on bulletin boards and places approved by the RD. Only the RD may post time-sensitive or emergency information in the residence hall fishbowl.
Records & Registration: This office in Bldg. 25, 1 st floor, is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, servicing students in the following areas:
Recreational Facilities: All students are encouraged to use Evangel’s facilities for recreation and physical fitness. The Mabee Student Fitness Center features side-by-side basketball courts, a jogging track, racquetball courts and an aerobics room. A myriad of exercise equipment is available including fixed and free weights, treadmills and stationary bikes. NOTE: Baseball and softball fields are reserved for intercollegiate competition and are not available for general student use.
Repair Services: Students should contact the Physical Plant Department to report A/C, heating, plumbing or electrical problems as well as broken doors, locks and windows. Enter a work order online with the Physical Plant through the Help link under the General tab on your student portal. A second option is to call FIXR (ext. 3497). In the event of an emergency after regular business hours, call Security (ext. 7000).
Security Department: Evangel’s Security Department is concerned for the safety of individual students as well as the community as a whole. The Security Department’s primary responsibility is to protect the people and property of Evangel University. This includes the responsibility for all persons at the University (e.g., students, faculty, staff and visitors) and for all property owned or operated by the University.
You may contact Security by calling ext. 7000. Emergency calls requiring response by Springfield authorities (Fire, Police or Ambulance) should be made to Security by calling on-campus 911 (not 9-911). Security Department dispatchers cover the telephones and two-way radios on a 24-hour basis to provide information and respond to emergencies. Dispatchers also monitor the National Weather Service radio network. A citywide alert system notifies the campus community of threatening weather conditions.
The Security Department offers special services such as a campus escort service, vehicle registration, traffic control, building security and assistance in medical emergencies. Security also publishes the annual campus crime statistics for review, as required by federal law.
Storage Rooms: Storage rooms are available on each residence hall floor for use during the academic year. This is an unsecured area; the University is not responsible for any items placed in them. No RH furniture (e.g., bed frames), bikes or other large items may be stored in this room. Fire code requires that the path to the breaker box must be clear at all times. There are no on- campus storage facilities available for the summer. Any items left after the halls have been vacated for the summer will be given to the EU Auxiliary for their annual sale.
Spiritual Life: “Be still and know that I am God.” The words of the Psalmist remind us of the importance of taking time to reflect upon the person of God. In a Christian university, with the pressures and demands of academics and community living, the danger is to study about God without really knowing Him. With this danger in mind, all members of the community are encouraged to set a time daily to seek God and find guidance and renewal in Him. Evangel University’s commitment to the spiritual development of its students is reflected in the emphasis given to the chapel program, the student-led CROSSwalk discipleship program and the student ministries outreach programs directed by the Coordinator of Church Ministry Opportunities (Mrs. Sandy Friesen). The Spiritual Life Office is located in the chapel, and the Campus Pastor is available for personal counsel and prayer.
Students are expected to regularly attend Sunday worship services at local churches and are strongly encouraged to find areas of lay leadership ministry in which they can participate. Students observed to not be regularly participating in the life and ministry of a local Christian congregation should expect to receive accountability and counsel from peers or a member of the faculty or staff.
Telephone System: The telecommunications system for Evangel features local telephone service, voice mail and answering service. Building community, an integral component of Evangel University life, is best characterized by students, faculty and staff helping one another daily to cultivate, nurture and practice what we profess. It is the intent of Evangel University that all that is done in the classroom, in co-curricular programs, in relationships established and in knowledge gained, will reflect the unique mission of this University.
It is expected that students who come to Evangel University will desire to live out their Christian faith by applying Christian principles to their everyday living. The reality of college life, both on and off campus, is that each individual is required to make choices in the areas of thought, behavior and lifestyle; to be self-disciplined; and to be held accountable by the university community. Evangel University reserves the right to discipline any student who, in the University’s sole judgment, does not conform either to the stated regulations governing student conduct or to the expressed principles, policies, programs and expectations of the University.
Although there is much we share in common as a community of believers, there is a need to recognize that we come also as individuals with a variety of cultural backgrounds, convictions and perspectives relative to appropriate dress, behavior and lifestyle. It is helpful for students to understand that certain biblical principles are foundational for the behavior and character of a maturing person in Christian community. In order to enhance the effective functioning of this community, Evangel has established certain behavioral norms based on these biblical principles:
Evangel University has long recognized the value of maintaining certain behavioral standards that contribute to the professional and Christian atmosphere on campus, foster fellowship with a wide range of Christians and assist in strengthening our Christian testimony to our community. In this light, the University has set a standard of behavior for all students, faculty and staff. By virtue of enrollment each student agrees to abide by these standards. Regarding the standards of behavior, there are those standards that are specifically outlined in Scripture and those standards by which the community agrees to abide.
Violation of the standards listed below will result in discipline as described in section v, Community Accountability.
Standards Based on Scripture The following behavioral expectations are binding for all members of the Evangel University community for the entire duration of their enrollment at Evangel, including all breaks during and between semesters:
Those acts which are expressly forbidden in Scripture, including among others, sexual immorality (including premarital/extramarital sex and homosexual behavior), drunkenness, theft, profanity, pornography, occult practices, and dishonesty, must not be practiced by members of this community (Leviticus 18:22, 19:31; Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 5:11-13, 6:9-20; Ephesians 5:3-5; 1 Thessalonians 5:22). While these behaviors are prohibited by Scripture, change and freedom are attainable through Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 6:9-11).
Those concerns which are often known as sins of the spirit and sins of the tongue, including such sins as covetousness, jealousy, pride, lust, envy, immodesty, impatience, backbiting, enmity, strife, outburst of anger, factions, bitterness, an unforgiving spirit, slander, discrimination and prejudice must not characterize members of this community. (Jeremiah 9: 3-19; Mark 7:20- 23; Galatians 5:19-21). Although these issues are more difficult to discern, they can be destructive to the healthy functioning of the community.
Recognizing the Christian obligation to submit to the governing authorities (Romans 13:1; 1 Peter 2:13-17), individuals related to Evangel University are expected to uphold the laws of the local community, the state, and the nation. This includes, but is not limited to, laws respecting underage drinking, DUI/DWI, and possession or use of illegal drugs. The University reserves the right to review actions taken by civil authorities regarding any student or student organization, and to determine if the imposition of additional disciplinary sanctions by the University would be appropriate.
Some regulations, which are neither the basis of our standing in Christ nor a necessary consequence of it, can be beneficial to the life and testimony of both the individual and the institution. To this end, the University expects its faculty, staff, and students to refrain from possessing or using alcoholic beverages and tobacco; abusing prescription or nonprescription drugs; using vulgar and profane language; gambling; and social dancing . (A significant number of evangelical Christians view sexually suggestive dancing as immoral and understand that dancing often occurs in environments that are morally questionable [see article on dancing in The Assemblies of God Perspectives: Matters of Christian Character , Springfield, MO: Gospel Publishing House, 2000]. Therefore, social dancing is not permitted on campus, at EU-sponsored events or away from campus in clubs, bars, lounges or any venue in which alcoholic beverages are present. However, acceptable forms of expression in the academic program may include sanctioned rhythmic movements, folk dance, ethnic games, and the use of choreography in dramas, musical productions, and athletic events.)
Further, faculty, staff and students are expected to abstain from attendance at or participation in all activities (e.g., clubs, lounges, bars) that are morally degrading or may cause one to violate the University’s behavioral standards. This includes individual decisions regarding movies and television programs viewed and other entertainment recognized as recreational or social. Evangel University does not presume to be a censoring agency for all activities; it does, however, expect tangible evidence of maturing Christian convictions.
Responsibility, accountability, and discipline all serve an important purpose in both individual and community growth. Each member of the Evangel community has committed himself/herself to the responsibility of living within the expectations and guidelines stated in the Student Handbook and summarized in the Character and Lifestyle Covenant . The Covenant must be signed prior to the first semester registration, and it is in force for the duration of the student’s enrollment at Evangel.
Character and Lifestyle Covenant
Evangel University is a distinctively Christian institution that is rooted in Evangelical, Holiness and Pentecostal traditions. Because of that heritage, we attempt to develop and interpret all we do from a conservative Christian perspective. We believe that Evangel’s standards are consistent with biblical principles and are designed to promote the welfare of the entire community. Although students’ personal convictions may differ, all students are required each semester to sign and adhere to the following covenant in order to foster fellowship and harmony within Evangel’s community and to witness to our surrounding community.
Statement of Commitment
I have read the Evangel University Character and Lifestyle Covenant and agree to abide by the terms of this covenant and all other behavioral standards of the university, both on and off campus while I am a student of Evangel University. I also understand that failure to live up to this standard will result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from Evangel University.
|
The following standards are not exhaustive, but representative of the range of disciplinary issues considered by the University. Standard consequences are indicated for the sake of consistency in upholding Evangel University’s community standards. Note: A University Accountability Panel or Board may impose consequences for any violation of the Character and Lifestyle Covenant , whether or not such violation is listed below.
Abortion: The University holds the following position with respect to the Sanctity of Human Life
God has ordained marriage to bring a man and a woman together as the foundation for a new family. He empowers them, through their sexual union, to create new human life. The Bible is clear in its teaching on the sanctity of human life. Life begins at conception and is precious to God from that very moment. This fact makes the practice of abortion abhorrent in God’s eyes.
When sexual union occurs outside of marriage, God’s heart is grieved. Still, He extends redemptive grace to those who have offended Him. When pregnancy results from that union, Evangel University, as an instrument of God, strives to extend redemptive grace to each of the individuals involved, including the unborn child. Crisis pregnancy assistance, designed to protect the expectant mother and her unborn child, will be provided through the Office of Student Development.
[Students (male and female) participating in securing an abortion are subject to Dismissal]
Academic Dishonesty: Incidents of academic dishonesty (plagiarism or cheating) are handled by the Academic Affairs Division and reported to the Student Development Division.
