Evangel University Auxiliary — lasting impact
As an Evangel graduate, employed by the Springfield school system and the wife of an Evangel faculty member, Jeanine Bartels is an active member of the Evangel University Auxiliary.
A woman who wears many hats, Bartels shares her perspective on the value and importance of the EU Auxiliary. “I guess you could say I am truly getting a well-rounded education from this University,” Bartels says. “I feel so blessed to be a part of what God is doing here.”
What is the EU Auxiliary?
The Evangel University Auxiliary, originally established as the Ladies Auxiliary, was founded in 1955 as a supporting arm of the University.
Who is involved?
EU Auxiliary members span generations to include women who are pioneer graduates of the University, current students, alumnae, and women who believe in the mission of Evangel — wives, mothers, grandmothers, and friends. The EU Auxiliary is an organization of more than 150 Christian women connected by their desire to support Evangel and dedicated to making a difference. Any woman who has an interest in having a Christian university in Springfield, Mo., can be a part of this organization.
The generational involvement has been an inspiration to Bartels. “All of the ladies who have been here for many years have helped mentor me and shared with me all the wonderful things God has done for the school over the years,” she says. “It helps build my vision for what God wants to do in the future.”

What is the role of the EU Auxiliary?
As Bartels points out, members of the EU Auxiliary are a vision-oriented group of women with a deep-rooted tradition in providing support to the students, administration, faculty, and staff.
Playing a vital role in campus improvement, the EU Auxiliary has a three-pronged approach to providing support through:
- Prayer
- Scholarships
- Projects
How has the EU Auxiliary helped students?
Since its inception, the EU Auxiliary has contributed to the University in significant ways. One of the most valuable areas of support is the scholarship program. EU Auxiliary members currently provide six annual scholarships. Additionally, funds raised by the EU Auxiliary have directly improved the educational experience for students.
“Muriel Denton, the EU Auxiliary president, and the other ladies on the board have such a heart for this University and the students,” Bartels says.
What are some of the EU Auxiliary’s projects?
Since Evangel’s beginning in 1955, EU Auxiliary members have been a constant support by volunteering time and talents and have been tireless in the pursuit of funds for campus needs.

The EU Auxiliary has hosted a colossal garage sale annually since 1964. The sale started out in a garage, but the increase of saleable items required expanding into the Mabee Student Fitness Center.
The EU Auxiliary has funded projects through profits from a colossal garage sale held each May, which was started in 1964. Though the sale was originally started in a garage, the increase of salable items has expanded, requiring use of the Mabee Student Fitness Center.
Other recent fund-raising efforts include membership pledges, the “Chocoholic” bake sale, pecan sales, discount card sales, and sales from tapestry throws that display campus buildings.
Projects have included the pipe organ and a grand piano for the Chapel, the Heritage Room in the new Riggs administration building, and the uniforms for the new marching band which commenced this fall. Currently our project is to furnish the Heritage Room.

How does the EU Auxiliary support other campus efforts?
EU Auxiliary members hold a monthly prayer meeting the first Tuesday of each month in the Prayer Chapel of the Riggs administration building.
“The prayer group led by Anne Spence [wife of Dr. Robert H. Spence, president] has been a time of growth and anticipation as we take the needs of the campus to the throne and wait in anticipation for what God will do,” Bartels says.
What are the benefits of being a member of the EU Auxiliary?
“Being a part of EUA has helped me to get connected and stay connected with the needs of the University,” Bartels says. “Being involved in the planning of projects to help the University and raising money for scholarships has been a joy to me.”
