Dorm Room Design Accuracy & Room Variations

Dorm Room Design - Instructions - Samples

The dorm room design application is intended to help students plan what to bring. It is not meant to be a precise and definitive floor plan for all dorm rooms. The dorm halls vary as well as the rooms within each hall. When designing your room, please allow extra room for variations and space for you to move around. Generally speaking, the room layout is accurate within six inches. Detailed information about major variations across dorm halls is provided below.

Ceiling heights

The ceilings are generally around 103 inches from the floor. The upper floors of Krause, Scott, Spence and Walther have a lower ceiling of about 96 inches.

Note: Some halls have a heating/ac unit hanging from the ceiling by the door (look below).

Furniture

All dorm rooms have two twin beds, two desks and a chest of drawers. Furniture items vary in size. Generally, the twin beds are 74 inches by 38 inches. The desks range from 44-48 inches wide, 24 inches in depth and about 35 inches tall. The chest of drawers are about 32 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 35-39 inches tall.

Note: Lofts will add additional inches to bed measurements. Be sure to consider this when designing the layout of your room. Read the loft guidelines.

Heating/AC units

Lewis and Burgess halls have heating/cooling units that hang down from the ceiling. These units are located near the entrance door and are flush with the entrance wall. They are about 36 inches along the entrance wall and extend out 24 inches towards the room. These units do not hang lower than 12 inches from the ceiling.

Note: All halls have heat and AC.

Fixed wall lights

Krause, Scott and Walther halls have fixed lights attached to the wall. These wall lights also act as a bookshelf. These fixed lights are 60 inches from the floor and are 45 inches wide and 12 inches deep. You can view these wall lights by checking the check box located at the top of the application.
