The Federal Perkins Loan is a 5% fixed interest loan. Interest charges and repayment of principal begin nine months after the student leaves school or drops below half-time enrollment. In certain circumstances students may defer repayment. In addition, portions of the loan may be cancelled or forgiven by teaching in low-income areas, nursing, and other professions. The details of these and additional deferment and cancellation provisions may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office and are explained in your promissory note. This loan must be repaid unless cancellation requirements are met. The Perkins Loan is limited to students who have exceptional need as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.
Evangel University utilizes the services of ECSI, Inc. to bill and service our Federal Perkins Loans. The toll-free telephone number for ECSI is 1- 888-549-3274 . ECSI’s website is www.ecsi.net.
One of the many exciting features of the ECSI service is that you will now have improved access to your account(s) on the Internet. ECSI’s website is http://www.ecsi.net. Through this site, you will be able to verify when your payments have been received, update address and phone information, verify account balances, obtain loan payoff amounts, sign-up for electronic billing, and make your payments. You may also download various forms such as deferments, forbearance requests, etc. To access ECSI’s system you will need a two digit school code, your Social Security # and a five digit pin # which can be obtained by calling ECSI.
Another exciting feature is that ECSI provides payment options such as Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT/ACH), payment date choice (only if using EFT), and Credit Card payments for all borrowers (additional fee applies to all credit card payments). You can contact ECSI or log onto their website and initiate this service after you have made at least one payment by check.
Loan repayment begins promptly nine months after you cease to be enrolled at least half-time (six hours for fall/spring semesters). Failure to receive a bill does not negate your responsibility to pay. If you are ever in the position of needing to make a loan payment but you either were not sent a bill or have misplaced your bill, follow these simple instructions: (Always make your check payable to Evangel University) Mail to: ECSI 181 Montour Run Road Coraopolis, PA 15108. Be sure to write your account number (Social Security number) on the check so that the payment will be accurately posted to your account(s).
Failure to either make payment or file a deferment form will result in the delinquency being reported to the credit bureau . It is the policy of the Evangel University Student Loan Repayment Office to charge late fees to Perkins loan borrowers’ accounts. The amount of the late fee is determined as follows: a late charge of 20% of the payment that is one month past due will be applied to the borrower’s account.
For questions or concerns regarding your Federal Perkins Loan, please contact ECSI. If your question is not answered to your satisfaction or the service you receive from ECSI is not acceptable, please call Tina Telle, Federal Perkins Loan Repayment Specialist at Evangel University. The phone number is 1-800-382-6435, ext. 7422 or email.
If, after graduation, you obtain employment in the field of teaching, law enforcement or corrections, social work, or the allied medical professions (including nursing), you may be eligible to receive deferment and cancellation of your Perkins loan. Information is available on the ECSI website to help you determine whether you qualify for these entitlements. You can also cancel 15% of your Perkins loan for the first two years of Peace Corps volunteerism and 20% for the third and fourth years of Peace Corps volunteerism for a maximum of 70% of your Perkins loan.
If you fall into one of the cancellation categories do not include your Perkins loan in a consolidation. Once consolidated the entitlement is lost.
