Evangel’s Stat Leaders

Missouri Valley Stat Leaders

EU vs. HAAC
Evangel is 92-39-1 against Heart of America Athletic Conference foes since joining the league in 1988. That record includes seven forfeit losses in 1988 (99-32-1 on the field). After a 1995 loss to Benedictine, Evangel has built a 63-14-1 record versus HAAC teams and at one point reeled off 19 straight conference wins before dropping a game to Baker in 1997.

Since beginning football in 1977, Evangel is 106-49-1 versus teams in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Crusaders logged their 100th win against a team from the HAAC on Nov. 16 of 2002 when they defeated Central Methodist 28-7.

Last Year, Evangel vs. Missouri Valley
Armed with a comfortable 35-7 halftime lead and a 41-21 margin with 5:28 left in the third quarter, the Crusaders seemed to have their Sept. 21, 2002, home game with Missouri Valley in control. Missouri Valley, however, scored the next three TDs and the game was tied at the end of regulation, 41-41. EU’s Ben Flowers had blocked the extra point attempt by Gary Burley on the first of the three TDs.

In the first overtime, Evangel grabbed the lead on its first possession when Nathan Griepp hauled in a 22-yard pass from Brett Mitchell, who set a new school record with his 443 yards of total offense in the game. David Peppelman, who had broken the EU
record for consecutive extra point kicks in the game with 29 straight, had his sixth attempt of the game blocked, giving Evangel a 47-41 lead.

Missouri Valley’s Roy Harden then finished off the Vikings’ first OT drive with a one-yard run for the game-tying score. Burley then booted the extra point to give Missouri Valley the 48-47 victory over the No. 3-ranked Crusaders. Quarterbacks Mitchell and Harden sparkled for their respective offenses. In addition to his school-record 443 total offensive yards, Mitchell ran for a career-high 138 yards on 21 carries and scored two TDs. He also passed for a career-high 305 yards on 18 of 35 accuracy with two TDs and no interceptions.

Harden completed 22 of 39 passes for 300 yards and five TDs. His fifth TD aerial of the game, a seven-yarder to Todd Durant tied the game (with Burley’s kick) at the end of regulation, and his one-yard run in OT with another Burley kick proved to be the game-winner.
