Springfield, Mo. — The Evangel University Symphonic Band will present its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, in the University’s Chapel Auditorium.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The 67-piece band will be conducted by Professor John Shows, chairman of the Music Department at Evangel.

Dr. John Akins, professor of music theory and composition at Evangel, is composer of Invincibility March, which will serve as the program opener.

A woodwind trio will be featured in the performance of Concerto Grosso for 2 flutes and clarinet by George Handel. Soloists will be Lania Bonk, flute; Rebekah Yeazel, flute; and Andrea Bonk, clarinet.

The Bonk sisters are from Lancaster, Pa. Lania is a music education major, and Andrea is an electronic media major. Yeazel, a music education major, is from Kenosha, Wis.

Also on the program is Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar. The original orchestral composition consisted of the theme and 14 variations, musically depicting some of Elgar’s friends. This band arrangement by Earl Slocum includes the theme and only six variations that work very well for the wind instruments.

Other selections include With Quiet Courage by Larry Daehn, Applause! by Takamasa Sakai, Washington Grays March by Claudio Grafulla, Trauersinfonie by Richard Wagner, and a Sammy Nestico arrangement of Malaguena by Ernesto Lecouna.
