Psychology alumni publish Forgiveness article

Springfield, Mo. — Two Evangel University alumni recently published an article titled “Following Derailed Clergy: A Message of Healing for a Shocked Congregation.”

The article describes the problem of distress congregants experience following the shocking discovery of a pastor’s offense and offers suggestions on how church leadership can promote healing through a message of forgiveness, reconciliation and restoration. The authors describe the scope of the problem and present a four-phase model of forgiveness.

Dr. Sutton, a psychologist, is an associate professor of psychology at Evangel University.

Thomas, a graduate of Evangel University, is an adjunct professor of psychology at Ozark Technical community College. She is planning to pursue a doctoral degree in psychology.
