Springfield, MO. — Evangel University’s Students in Free Enterprise team won second place at the 2006 “Duel in the Ozarks,” a personal finance case study competition hosted by Drury University Oct. 19-21.
Evangel’s team earned $2,000 and a trophy for their efforts. A panel of six judges awarded the University of Tulsa first place.
Other teams competing were from Missouri State University, Culver-Stockton College, Lincoln University and Texas A& M International University.
Evangel’s winning team consisted of Lori Schumacher, senior management major from Stoughton, Wis.; Jonathan Roepcke, senior accounting and management major from Rio Rancho, N.M.; Mi-Sun “Sunny” Kim, senior management and marketing major from South Korea; and Andrew Carrier, senior psychology and management major from Temple, Pa.
The teams were presented a hypothetical case study about a family in financial distress. In just 36 hours, competitors had to research the situation and then develop and present a reasonable, workable and creative solution to the dilemma based on the family’s situation, economics, geography and resources.
“This was really a pressure situation and a great learning experience for us,” said Evangel team leader Schumacher. “It gives us a great appreciation for how Evangel prepares us for business and for life.”
