The Evangel men’s basketball team will begin its 2006-07 season on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4, at the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Tip-Off Classic in Waxahachie, Texas.
The Crusaders will face John Brown University ( Ark.) at 6 p.m. on Nov. 3. Evangel and host Southwestern Assemblies of God will meet at 6 p.m. on Nov. 4. Both EU opponents are NAIA Division I members.
Springfield’s Central Bible College will play opposite Evangel both days. CBC is a Division II member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

Evangel, Central Bible, and host Southwestern Assemblies of God are all beginning their 2006-07 seasons in the classic. EU is ranked No. 3 on the NAIA II preseason poll. John Brown began its season on Oct. 30 at home against Hillsdale Baptist and won 92-47. Joel Tesis totaled 16 point and controlled seven rebounds. Cody Page added 14 points and Davanaugh added seven rebounds.
Evangel and John Brown have played 57 games in the series and EU holds a slight 29-28 advantage. The two teams last met at College of the Ozarks Classic on Jan. 5, 1998 and EU prevailed by two points, 69-67.
Evangel leads the series versus Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 3-0. On Nov. 11 of last season, EU defeated SAGU 89-66 in Ashcroft Center. Two seasons ago, EU won 93-79 at SAGU in Waxahachie, Texas, and three seasons ago, EU defeated SAGU 83-54 in the Ozarks Food Harvest Classic at Central Bible College in Springfield.
Evangel is directed by head coach Steve Jenkins. Jenkins begins his 25th season in 2006-07 and has a 423-334 record.
John Sheehy is John Brown’s head coach. Jerry Boone is the head coach for Southwestern Assemblies of God.
No. 3-ranked Evangel will host No. 1-ranked (NAIA II preseason) on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.
Evangel ended the 2005-06 season with a 24-11 record, placed third (tied with MidAmerica Nazarene) in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. In the postseason tournament, EU caught fire and won all three games, defeating William Jewell in Liberty, Missouri, 68-66, in the championship game. The Crusaders then advanced to the second round of the NAIA II national tournament in Pt. Lookout, Mo. A 104-93 loss to eventual runner-up Huntington ( Ind.) ended EU’s season.
John Brown finished 16-15 in 2005-06. The Golden Eagles advanced to the first round of the NAIA I national tournament and lost 65-63 to Azusa Pacific ( Calif.). JBU won the NAIA I national championship in 2004-05.
Southwestern Assemblies of God finished 16-19 in 2005-06. Winners of their conference tournament, the Lions appeared in the NAIA I national tournament, losing in the first round to Mountain State ( W.Va.) 84-64.
For the fifth year in a row, all Evangel University men’s basketball and two women’s games will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio (KGMY, 1400 AM). The two women’s games are Dec. 7 at MidAmerica Nazarene and Jan. 23 at College of the Ozarks. In addition, all of the EU women’s postseason games will be broadcast.
All Evangel men’s games and several women’s games are also webcast by Evangel’s 2006-07 Internet broadcast partner, All In Broadcasting, at www.allinbroadcasting.com. The postgame show will provide a complete recap of each game and it is sponsored by the Assemblies of God Credit Union. Evangel’s Internet partner is Best Western - Deerfield Inn.
Ed Beach, Evangel director of broadcasting and marketing for athletics, will handle the play-by-play duties as the “Voice of the Crusaders” for the fifth season in a row.
Beginning after Dec. 2 of this year, a selected men’s and women’s “game of the week” will be available for viewing about a week after the contest. The Evangel games can be viewed at All In Broadcasting, www.allinbroadcasting.com. All games will be archived up to one month after the season’s end. Fans can access a game for 99 cents for 24 hours or for $2.99 can watch the game unlimited times and download it as well.
All games are a simulcast with the radio coverage on ESPN 1400 AM and the video portion is produced by ECTV (Evangel Cable Television), Evangel’s student television station.
