It Doesn’t Get Much Better Than This

Evangel, ranked No. 3 on the preseason NAIA II nationall poll, will host No. 1-ranked College of the Ozarks on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Ashcroft Center.

EU’s Record

Evangel is off to a 1-1 start. The Crusaders opened their 2006-07 season at the Southwestern Assemblies of God Classic in Waxahachie, Texas.

On Nov. 3 EU lost 87-78 to John Brown ( Ark.) in overtime. Jackson Capel led EU with 20 points. Shane Nicholson added 18 points with seven rebounds. Tim Dial totaled 12 points and Jerod Floyd came off the bench to score 10. Todd Simon led the EU rebounders with nine boards.

The next day, Nov. 4, the Crusaders defeated the host team, Southwestern Assemblies of God, 79-59. Jerod Floyd led EU with 13 points off the bench. Austin Brewer also came off the bench to score 12 points along with starter Jackson Capel.

C of O’s Record

College of the Ozarks has played two games, both were at home, and both resulted in wins. The Bobcats defeated Williams Baptist ( Ark.) 93-63 on Oct. 30 and then played host to Bethel College ( Kans.) in C of O’s homecoming game. C of O won 77-58 to keep its record unblemished at 2-0.

Against Williams Baptist, Michael Bonaparte recorded a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Chris Pullen, Heath Sitton, and Stephen Friar each scored 15 points. Corey Stone added 12 points.

Bonaparte again led C of O against Bethel with 23 points. Heath Sitton was credited with 22 points and Chris Pullen had 12. Stephen Friar led the rebounding with nine caroms.

Series

Evangel leads the series 42-29 and has a 15-9 series lead in Ashcroft Center. Last season, College of the Ozarks defeated Evangel 74-72 in Pt. Lookout and 90-75 in Springfield. Evangel has lost its last two home games to C of O - last season’s 90-75 loss and an 81-67 loss on 11-9-04.

The first game played between the two schools was played in 1958 at Drury and Evangel won by one point, 73-72.

The Coaches

Evangel is directed by head coach Steve Jenkins. Jenkins begins his 25th season in 2006-07 and has a 424-335 record. Jenkins’ 2001-02 team won the NAIA II national championship.

Steve Shepherd is the head coach for College of the Ozarks. Shepherd, who was an Evangel assistant for four seasons (1998-2002), is beginning his fifth year at C of O and has a 341-123 record. Shepherd’s 2005-06 squad won the NAIA II national championship.

Up Next

Evangel will be idle for a week before beginning its Heart of America Athletic Conference schedule on Thursday, Nov. 16. Central Methodist University will be the opponent. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Ashcroft Center.

Last Year

Evangel ended the 2005-06 season with a 24-11 record, placed third (tied with MidAmerica Nazarene) in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. In the postseason tournament, EU caught fire and won all three games, defeating William Jewell in Liberty, Missouri, 68-66, in the championship game. The Crusaders then advanced to the second round of the NAIA II national tournament in Pt. Lookout, Mo. A 104-93 loss to eventual runner-up Huntington ( Ind.) ended EU’s season.

The Bobcats of College of the Ozarks won the 2005-06 NAIA II national championship, defeating Huntington 74-56 in the title game.

C of O finished the season with a 29-6 record and won the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 13-1 record and also won the conference’s postseason tournament.

Radio

For the fifth year in a row, all Evangel University men’s basketball and two women’s games will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio (KGMY, 1400 AM). The two women’s games are Dec. 7 at MidAmerica Nazarene and Jan. 23 at College of the Ozarks. In addition, all of the EU women’s postseason games will be broadcast.

Internet

All Evangel men’s games and several women’s games are also webcast by Evangel’s 2006-07 Internet broadcast partner, All In Broadcasting, at www.allinbroadcasting.com. The postgame show will provide a complete recap of each game and it is sponsored by the Assemblies of God Credit Union. Evangel’s Internet partner is Best Western - Deerfield Inn.

“Voice of the Crusaders”

Ed Beach, Evangel director of broadcasting and marketing for athletics, will handle the play-by-play duties as the “Voice of the Crusaders” for the fifth season in a row.

Video

Beginning after Dec. 2 of this year, a selected men’s and women’s “game of the week” will be available for viewing about a week after the contest. The Evangel games can be viewed at All In Broadcasting, www.allinbroadcasting.com. All games will be archived up to one month after the season’s end. Fans can access a game for 99 cents for 24 hours or for $2.99 can watch the game unlimited times and download it as well.

All games are a simulcast with the radio coverage on ESPN 1400 AM and the video portion is produced by ECTV (Evangel Cable Television), Evangel’s student television station.
