Evangel is 4-5 and has lost it’s last two contests. The Crusaders had a bye week on Nov. 4 after losing at home to William Jewell, 12-10, on Oct. 28.
Both teams did all their scoring in the second quarter. William Jewell started the scoring with a safety after tackling EU quarterback Derek Rasmussen in the end zone. The Cardinals then added a 26-yard field goal by Stephen Bader and turned an Evangel fumble into a 7-yard TD by Zach Cunningham. The extra point by Bader gave WJ a 12-0 lead midway thru the second quarter. With just under five minutes left until halftime, EU’s Derek Rasmussen hooked up with Edward Sands on a 20-yard TD pass and Trevor Gies added the extra point to close the gap to five points, 12-7. William Jewell was forced to punt on its next possession and EU drove to the William Jewell 17 yard line before settling for a 34-yard field goal by Gies and what would prove to be the final score, 12-10. Dan Kolp led EU’s rushing with 66 yards on 15 carries. Rasmussen passed for 106 yards, completed 12 of 26 with one interception and the TD to Sands. Kolp also led all receivers with five catches for 37 yards.
Central Methodist is 2-8 overall and 1-8 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Eagles lost 23-10 at William Jewell on Nov. 4.
William Jewell led 20-3 at the half. Central Methodist’s Alex Beard nailed a 48-yard field goal for CMU’s only points of the first half. William Jewell’s defense limited Central Methodist to 135 total yards of offense.
Evangel is led by Scott Metcalf in his fifth season. Metcalf has a 31-21 record at Evangel and served as an EU assistant for 11 years prior to assuming the head coach job.
The Central Methodist Eagles are led by Merle Masonholder in his fifth year. Masonholder has a 16-38 record at CMU.
Evangel has a 20-1 series advantage versus Central Methodist. The Crusaders’ only loss to CMU was in 1977 - Evangel’s first year of football - by a 23-20 score in Fayette.
