Lady Crusaders Resume Conference Action

The Evangel women will travel to Kansas City, Missouri to face the Avila University Eagles on Thursday, Nov. 30. The Heart of America Athletic Conference game will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Mabee Field House.

Evangel’s Record

Evangel is 1-5 overall and 1-1 against Heart of America Athletic Conference foes. EU is tied for fifth place in the conference with Benedictine and Central Methodist.

EU’s most recent action came against two NCAA II opponents in the Missouri Southern State University Pizza Hut/Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 24-25. The Evangel ladies lost to host Missouri Southern, 81-57, on Nov. 24 and dropped a 67-61 decision to Pittsburg ( Kans.) State on Nov. 25.

Avila’s Record

Avila’s women are 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The Eagles began the 2006-07 season with six straight wins, but suffered losses in their last two outings. Avila lost 79-53 on Nov. 25 at home to Ottawa ( Kans.) University, an NAIA II team, and lost 86-59 at NCAA II member Rockhurst University in Kansas City on Nov. 27.

Series vs. Avila

Evangel leads the series with Avila, 27-5, and has won the last 17 meetings. The Lady Crusaders’ last loss to Avila was a 55-48 decision in Kansas City on Dec. 3, 1991. Avila’s win was its fifth in a row against Evangel and the streak accounted for all of the Eagles’ wins versus EU.

At Avila, Evangel leads the series 13-3. The Lady Crusaders have won the last eight in Kansas City. EU’s last loss at Avila was the 1991 loss (55-48). The other two losses were on Feb. 14, 1987 (65-58) and Jan. 25, 1986 (80-76).

Last season, Evangel won a two-point game in Kansas City, 56-54. At home, Evangel played a strong defensive game and won 54-38.

Katie’s First Two-Digit Total of ‘06-07

Katie Leischner’s career-best, 24-point outburst versus Missouri Southern on Nov. 24 is her first double-digit points total this season and the tenth of her EU career.

Leichner’s performance included six-of-six shooting from the 3-point arch, 8 of 10 marksmanship overall and 2 of 2 accuracy from the line.

The Coaches

Evangel is led by Leon Neal (Evangel, 1989). Neal has a 284-129 record in 13 years.

Avila’s head coach is Larry Williams (Central Missouri State, 1969). Williams is in his first year at Avila, but has 24 years of coaching experience. His high school record is 268-164 and he was the assistant men’s coach at William Jewell, helping the Cardinals achieve a 148-81 mark.

In addition to all of their postseason games, two regular season Lady Crusader basketball games will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio, KGMY 1400 AM. The games are: at MidAmerica Nazarene on Dec. 7 and at College of the Ozarks on Jan. 23.

Several women’s games will be webcast by Evangel University’s 2006-07 Internet broadcast partner,

All In Broadcasting, at www.allinbroadcasting.com. The postgame show will provide a complete recap of each game and it is sponsored by the Assemblies of God Credit Union. Evangel’s Internet partner is Best Western - Deerfield Inn.

“Voice of the Crusaders”

Ed Beach, Evangel director of broadcasting and marketing for athletics, will handle the play-by-play duties as the “Voice of the Crusaders” for the fifth season in a row.

Beginning after Dec. 2 of this year, a selected men’s and women’s “game of the week” will be available for viewing about a week after the contest. The Evangel games can be viewed at All In Broadcasting, www.allinbroadcasting.com. All games will be archived up to one month after the season’s end. Fans can access a game for 99 cents for 24 hours or for $2.99 can watch the game unlimited times and download it as well.

All games are a simulcast with the radio coverage on ESPN 1400 AM and the video portion is produced by ECTV (Evangel Cable Television), Evangel’s student television station.
