Several players were honored at the annual Evangel University volleyball awards banquet. The 2006 banquet was held on Dec. 1 in Crusader Hall on the Evangel campus. Evangel head volleyball coach Mary Penrod made the presentations.
Brittni Harris (6-0, Sr., MB, DelRay Beach, Fla.) was honored as the Most Valuable Player and also won the Best Blocker Award. Harris was a first-team NAIA Region V and Heart of America Athletic Conference selection for the second year in a row. She set school records for career kills (1,706), kill percentage (.374) and blocks (737). Harris averaged 4.1 kills per game and had a .375 kill percentage. In addition, Harris finished the 2006 season with 184 blocks and 76 were solo stops.
The Most Improved Player Award was given to Julie O’Dell (6-0, So., MB/RS, Rogersville, Mo.). O’Dell won second team all-conference laurels. She finished the year with a 2.7 kills per game average and .211 kill percentage. O’Dell had 43 solo blocks and 129 total blocks.
Christi Wade (6-0, Jr., MB, Warrensburg, Mo.) was selected as the Newcomer of the Year. Wade came to Evangel from State Fair Community College ( Mo.). She averaged 1.5 kills per game, had a .224 kill percentage, and finished the year with 103 blocks (31 solos).
The Defensive Player of the Year Award was presented to Kristina Mooney (5-8, Jr., OH/DS, Rogersville, Mo.). Mooney led EU’s defense with 525 digs and averaged 4.2 digs per game. She also had 53 blocks and led the team with her .941 serve reception percentage (49 errors, 837 attempts). Mooney was an honorable mention all-conference pick.
Shannon Yates (5-4, Jr., DS, Rogersville, Mo.) was the recipient of the Best Server Award. Yates finished 2006 with a team-high 50 aces.
The Coach’s Award was given to Lindy Barnes (5-4, Sr., DS, Fair Grove, Mo.). Barnes was an honorable mention all-conference selection. She ended the season with 483 digs, a .924 service reception percentage (55 errors, 725 attempts), and 21 aces.
The 2006 Lady Crusaders finished their season with a 21-14 record.
