Springfield, MO. — A group of Evangel students, staff, faculty, alumni, and local health care professionals are scheduled to return from Pretoria, South Africa, this evening. Their flight is scheduled to arrive at the Springfield Branson National Airport at 9 p.m.
The group left Springfield May 5 to participate in the fifth medical missions trip sponsored by HealthCare Ministries and the Evangel University Science and Technology Department.
The team, directed by Michelle Mahoney, Pharmacy Director for HealthCare Ministries, and assisted by Dr. Richard Honderick, St. John’s physician, conducted clinics with the Adonai International Assembly of God and medical missionaries Earl and Laura Goodrich. They collaborated with a South African medical team, which provided nursing students to help with interpreting and patient education.
Dr. Honderick and Laura are both alumni of Evangel University.
Evangel affiliates include alumni Dr. Honderick, Laura Goodrich, Heather Hassell, Christine Nelson and Megan Rooney; Susie Bryan, director of health services and family nurse practitioner at Evangel; and Erica Harris, alumna and assistant professor of biology.

Others who served with the team are dental assistant Gail Kinison and dentists Tom Moeller and Jim Robinson from Wisconsin; Joan Donovick, RN from Washington; and Margaret McMunn, RN from Pennsylvania. McMunn has been trained in HIV/AIDS counseling and testing and directed that portion of the clinic services.
Prior HealthCare Ministries/Evangel medical team trips have traveled to Honduras (2001), Nicaragua (2002), Belize (2004) and Sri Lanka (2006). This is the second trip for Eng, Hassell and Nelson, who went to Sri Lanka last year.
