Col. Stanley Remer awarded $200 to all 14 Social Work seniors for use toward purchasing textbooks. Some pictured here, from left: David Schillinger, Jonae Cunningham, Cara Bailey, Brittany Day, Tiffany Gunderson and Danielle Funderburk.
Ret. Col. Stanley G. Remer and his wife, Sondra, awarded a $200 scholarship to each of the 14 seniors majoring in Social Work. These scholarships will help students to purchase textbooks in spring.
The Behavioral Sciences Department honored the Remers for this donation at the Senior Scholarship Breakfast on Sept. 26, 2007. During this event, Remer spoke with students about his experience in healthcare social work.
As longtime supporters of Evangel’s Social Work Program, the Remers fund these and other endowed scholarships. In addition, the Remers have purchased professional organization memberships for juniors and seniors.
“We are continually amazed at Stan Remer’s generosity and support,” said Lacey Nunnally, director of the Social Work Program.
In 1990, Remer supported Dr. Billie Davis, professor emeritus, in efforts to develop the Social Work Program. He later helped to see the program through accreditation.
Seniors are thankful for the support. “I have been so blessed to receive this scholarship," Erin Pena said. "I am very appreciative of the Remers’ generosity and love for the Social Work Program at Evangel."
“It will really help to have some extra cash to live on next semester,” David Schillinger said.
Remer is the director of membership affairs at the Reserve Officers Association in Washington, D.C. He has served as a social worker at several Veterans of America Medical Centers throughout the United States.
An active Evangel alumnus, Remer joined the Evangel College Council in 1974, and he served on the Alumni Board of Directors from 1997-2000. Remer was awarded with the Evangel University Alumni Association President’s Award in 2002.
Remer met his wife, Sondra Bettis, while they were students at Evangel. They have two children, both of whom are Evangel alumni.
