Hillcrest High School Product Wins Weekly HAAC Award

Andrew Matrone, a graduate of Springfield’s Hillcrest High School, has been selected as the Heart of America Athletic Conference defensive player of the week. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound, sophomore linebacker was credited with 18 tackles in Evangel’s 16-14 homecoming loss to Baker on Oct. 13. Matrone also had 2.5 tackles for losses and two sacks. He led an Evangel defensive unit that allowed Baker only 135 rushing and 85 passing yards while being on the field for nearly 42 minutes of the game.

Evangel’s (4-3, 3-3) next game is at Culver-Stockton (0-7, 0-6) in Canton, Mo., on Saturday, Oct. 20. Game time is 1 p.m. in Poulton Stadium.
