EU Social Sciences, ROTC host Veterans Day events

Springfield, Mo. — This morning Evangel University’s Department of Social Sciences and ROTC cadets began a series of events to honor American soldiers throughout history and to commemorate Veterans Day.

• This morning, Evangel ROTC cadets began chapel with a ceremony displaying the colors and honoring fallen soldiers.
• This evening, Evangel’s chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, the international social science honor society, will host an alternate chapel honoring veterans at 6:30 in Zimmerman 105. Refreshments will be served.

The event features guest speakers retired Lt. Col. Dale Garrett, assistant professor of public administration, and Sgt. Josh Davis, an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army and a sophomore music education major at Evangel.

A candlelight memorial on the intramural field will conclude the event.

• An exhibit titled “Veterans Day: A Personal Touch” will be on display Nov. 12 - 20 in the Department of Social Sciences lobby located on the second floor of Zimmerman Hall in the southeast corner.

The exhibit will include memorabilia and collectible items from the different American wars as well as the World War II-era O’Reilly Hospital. It will be accessible during regular office hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Everything in the exhibit has a connection to Evangel University.

• Also as a part of the Veterans Day events, former WW-II POW Coleman Estes — uncle of Evangel English professor Marilyn Quigley — will be speaking and answering questions at a forum on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., in Zimmerman Hall room 216.

Estes will also be signing Hell Frozen Over, a book that Quigley wrote about his war experiences at the Battle of the Bulge.
