Springfield, Mo. — The 170 residents of Walther Hall have named this semester “Tag You’re It!” because of the random acts of kindness they perform around the community.
As a part of this project, the women residents of Walther decided to perform four small projects that help the community of Springfield.
They will complete their fourth project in December — knitting hats and scarves for the Pregnancy Care Center.
The three projects already completed include collecting canned foods, volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club Halloween party and raking leaves for Springfield residents.
“Tag You’re It!” was the idea of Wendy Buttacy, Walther Hall resident director. Buttacy presented her ideas to the resident assistants. The future of the project is to do it every fall semester so new students can participate and get involved in the community.
“With a brand new staff and a lot of new girls in Walther it was a great way to get all of us involved in something,” Ashley Higgins, senior Walther RA, said. “It is so important to keep things in perspective in the midst of our busy lives, and it was a great reminder to all of us to reach out to the people around us in a tangible way.”
Higgins led the ‘Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat’ project. A group of students went door to door in north Springfield and collected canned goods. They collected more than 250 pounds of food for “The Kitchen.”
“It went extremely well,” Higgins said about the food collection. “We all had a great time meeting new people and doing something beneficial for the community at the same time.”
