Evangel hosts Culver-Stockton

The Crusaders are 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Evangel has won its last six games, after a stunning 81-79 loss at College of the Ozarks to open the season. EU led the entire game until a last-second C of O 3-pointer. The Crusaders are ranked No. 6 on the NAIA II preseason poll. The results for EU’s entire season are listed in the left-hand column.
Culver-Stockton is 2-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Wildcats have lost their last three contests. Most recently, C-SC lost 72-69 at Mount Mercy on Nov. 27. Prior to that loss, Culver-Stockton dropped games at Quincy University (105-88, Nov. 24) and at Iowa Wesleyan (70-57, Nov. 20). The Wildcats began their season with a 64-59 home loss to Hannibal-LaGrange and followed that loss with a 62-50 home victory versus William Woods. C-SC then lost at home to Iowa Wesleyan, 74-63, before picking up its first conference win at home vs. Graceland, 58-45, on Nov. 13. The Wildcats then began their current three-game losing streak.
Evangel out-lasted Central Methodist in overtime on Nov. 29. The Crusaders won their sixth consecutive game vs. Central Methodist in Fayette, Mo., 72-69. EU held a 33-30 halftime lead, however, Sid Stanley hit a runner with two seconds left to even the score at 58 all and push the game into overtime. With 11 seconds remaining in OT, EU’s Jackson Capel connected on two free throws to put EU up 71-67. Stanley, however, hit a shot on the next possession to pull CMU to within two, 71-69. Then with 3.6 seconds left on the clock, Shan Nicholson hit the front end of a two-shot free throw trip to put EU by the final score, 72-69. The Crusaders were led by Spud Harbour, who came off the bench to register his first collegiate double figure game with 21 points. Harbour made 8 of 13 field goals, including five of eight shooting from the 3-point arc. Tim Dial added 16 points and six boards. Jackson Capel totaled 11 points on an off-shooting night (3-14). Shane Nicholson scored 10 points, pulled down six rebounds, dished out five assists and had three steals.
Stanley was CMU’s top scorer with 29 points. Anthony Love added 20 points and eight rebounds. Jeff Blauvelt led all rebounders with 12 caroms.
CMU led the rebounding, 39-29, but had more turnovers 23-16. EU made 47.4 percent of its field goals and CMU connected on 44.1 percent. At the line, Central Methodist made 66.7 percent of its tries (10-15) and EU made 47.6 percent (10-21).
Evangel leads the series 37-15. EU has won 13 of the last 14 contests with Culver-Stockton. EU’s only loss in that string was an 80-77 OT loss in Canton on Dec. 4, 2004. Last season, the Crusaders won 78-75 in Canton, Mo., on Nov. 18 and won 84-75 at home on Jan. 20.
Evangel is led by Steve Jenkins, who begins his 26th season as the head coach in 2007-08. Jenkins (Evangel, 1974) has a 449-348 record in 26 seasons at the Crusader helm.
Brad Hoyt is Culver-Stockton’s head coach. Hoyt (Coe, 1997) is 21-46 in three seasons at Culver-Stockton.
EU junior Jackson Capel scored 11 points versus Central Methodist on Nov. 29 to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He has scored 1,010 points during his career. Capel is the 26th Crusader to score 1,000 points in a career. The list includes current teammates Tim Dial (1,367) and Todd Simon (1,088).
From the 3-point arc, Capel has scored 199 career treys. He needs 32 more 3-pointers to break the record of 230 set by Grant Curtis (2000-04) and four more to be the fourth Crusader to score 200 treys in a career.
