The Crusaders are 9-2. Evangel lost its first game of the year at College of the Ozarks on a last-second 3-pointer, won the next nine games in a row, then dropped an 81-63 decision at Southwest Baptist, an NCAA II team. The Crusaders are ranked No. 5 in NAIA II.
The Biola University Eagles are 7-4 and have won four of their last five games. In the Eagles’ most recent game, they defeated Wayne State (Neb.) 50-48 at home. Wayne State is an NCAA II member. Danny Jones led Biola with 14 points. He also had seven rebounds and two blocks. Rocky Hampton added 13 points, totaled six boards and rejected three shots. Marlon King scored 13 points, tallied seven rebounds and had four steals.
The Bethany University Bruins haven’t won a game in 15 tries this season. Most recently, the Bruins lost at No. 15-ranked California Baptist, 97-63. George Golden came off the bench to lead Bethany in the Dec. 17 game with 13 points and five rebounds.
Evangel’s starting post player, Tim Dial, was diagnosed with mononucleosis prior to EU’s home game vs. Avila on Dec. 6. It is uncertain when he will return to the lineup.
The Crusaders traveled to Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo., on Dec. 18. EU lost to the NCAA II Bearcats, 81-63. SBU shot the ball better, 45.6-35.0, and had more rebounds, 39-36. The Crusaders’ main problem, however, was taking care of the ball as EU led the turnover totals, 16-10. Jackson Capel poured in 27 points to lead EU, but he had to shoot 23 times (8 made) to do so and was an uncharacteristic 4 of 13 from the 3-point arc. He also pulled down five boards. Todd Simon scored 10 points and had five rebounds. Spud Harbour shared the rebounding edge with Simon and Jackson. He also had five rebounds.
Evangel is led by Steve Jenkins, who begins his 26th season as the head coach in 2007-08. Jenkins (Evangel, 1974) has a 452-349 record in 26 seasons at the Crusader helm. Jenkins won his 450th game on Dec. 1 vs. Culver-Stockton in Ashcroft Center, 72-54.
Biola is led by Dr. Dave Holmquist (Biola, 1974). Holmquist is 691-225 at Biola and is in his 28th year.
Bethany is led by Andrew Snelgrove (Bethany, 1992, in his first year.
Senior EU forward Todd Simon scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds vs. College of the Ozarks on Dec. 11. The double-double is the 12th of his career and his first in 2007-08.

EU junior Jackson Capel scored 11 points versus Central Methodist on Nov. 29 to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He has scored 1,104 points during his career. Capel is the 26th Crusader to score 1,000 points in a career. The list includes current teammates Tim Dial (1,391) and Todd Simon (1,140)
From the 3-point arc, Jackson Capel has scored 214 career treys. He needs 17 more 3-pointers to break the record of 230 set by Grant Curtis (2000-04). Capel is the fourth Crusader to score 200 or more treys in a career.
