Evangel’s Record

The Crusaders are 12-3 overall, 5-0 vs. Heart of America Athletic Conference foes, and ranked No. 7 in NAIA II (Jan. 9 poll). The Crusaders dropped two spots on the Jan. 9 poll after a No. 5 ranking on the Dec. 12 national top-25 list.

Missouri Valley’s Record

The Missouri Valley Vikings are 3-12 overall and 3-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. One of Missouri Valley’s wins came against MidAmerica Nazarene, the No. 1-ranked team in NAIA II. The Vikings defeated MidAmerica Nazarene at home, 79-78. It was MNU’s first loss of the season.

Dial Returns to Action

Evangel’s starting post player, Tim Dial, was diagnosed with mononucleosis prior to EU’s home game vs. Avila on Dec. 6 and missed the next five games. He was given permission to return to the lineup for the Graceland game on Jan. 5.

Capel Sets New Career Trey Mark

Jackson Capel needed five 3-pointers to break the Evangel career record for 3-pointers made in a career.. At home on Jan. 10 vs. Missouri Valley he scored the five treys to move in to the top spot. He now has scored 231 3-pointers in his career. The previous record holder was Grant Curtis (2000-04), who scored 230.

The Coaches

Evangel is led by Steve Jenkins, who begins his 26th season as the head coach in 2007-08. Jenkins (Evangel, 1974) has a 455-350 record in 26 seasons at the Crusader helm. Jenkins won his 450th game on Dec. 1 vs. Culver-Stockton, 72-54.

Chad Lance (Missouri Valley, 1998) is Missouri Valley’s head coach. Lance is 73-64 in his fifth year.

Chad Simon Honored by HAAC

Evangel junior forward Chad Simon was selected as the Heart of America Athletic Conference player of the week.

Simon led the Crusaders to their fourth conference win at Graceland on Jan. 5 with a career-high 20 points. He made 10 of 11 field goals and brought down eight rebounds - one shy of his career-best. In addition, Simon dished out three assists and had a blocked shot.

More Than a Scorer

Note only was Jackson Capel’s performance on Jan. 10 noteworthy because he broke the all-time EU 3-point record (231), but he also recorded the first double-double of his career. Capel scored 31 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. The 11 rebounds are also a career best and are his first double figure rebound total.

The Series, EU vs. MVC

Evangel leads the series, 47-22. The Missouri Valley Vikings, however, defeated Evangel twice during 2006-07. MV won 70-67 in Springfield on Jan. 8 and won 83-67 in Marshall on Feb. 12. EU had won the previous seven meetings. EU’s loss to Missouri Valley - prior to last year’s twin defeats - was in Marshall on Jan. 17, 2004, by a 79-61 score.

At home, Evangel enjoys a 31-6 series advantage against Missouri Valley. The Crusaders had won 14 games in a row at home vs. Missouri Valley prior to last season’s 3-point loss. EU’s loss prior to the 14 straight wins at home was on Feb. 9, 1995 (81-63).

Three Crusaders on 1000-Point List

EU junior Jackson Capel scored 11 points versus Central Methodist on Nov. 29 to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He has scored 1,191 points during his career and ranks No. 20. Capel is the 26th Crusader to score 1,000 points in a career. The list includes current teammates Tim Dial (No. 12 with 1,397) and Todd Simon (No. 21 with 1,172). Shane Nicholson is also closing in on 1,000 points. He has scored 911 points to date.
