It was announced today that Evangel guard Jackson Capel (6-3, Jr.) has been selected as the Heart of America Athletic Conference player of the week. Capel, who hails from Erlanger, Ky., averaged 30.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in two Evangel victories last week (Jan. 6-12) and, in the process, set two new Evangel 3-point field goal records.

Against Lindenwood on Jan. 10, Capel poured in 31 points and brought down a career-high 11 rebounds to lead EU to an 81-64 win. He made 5-of-12 from 3-point range to break the Evangel record for 3-point field goals made in a career (231). The previous mark of 230 was held by Grant Curtis (2000-04).

In Evangel’s 84-66 win at Missouri Valley on Jan. 12, Capel added to his career total, scorching the Vikings’ nets for yet another school-record. He scored a record nine 3-pointers and finished the game with 30 points. Capel broke the previous school record of eight 3-pointers that he shared with Kevin Baker. Capel had eight treys vs. Avila on Feb. 5, 2007. Baker tossed in his eight 3s versus College of Pharmacy on Jan. 31, 1994.

Heading into Evangel’s (Jan.17) home game against William Jewell, Capel has scored 70 3-pointers this season and has raised his school-record total to 240. He is averaging 21.7 points per contest. From the field, Capel has made 50.4 percent of his field goals, including 70-of-132 (.530) from beyond the 3-point arc. At the line, he has made 87.0 percent of his tries (47-54).

The Crusaders’ (13-3, 6-0 HAAC) home game with William Jewell (11-7, 7-1 HAAC) will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Ashcroft Center. Evangel is ranked No. 7 in NAIA II. William Jewell is receiving votes for the national top-25 list.
