The 2007-08 Evangel University track and field team began its season at the Missouri Valley College Invitational on Jan. 19. Eight athletes finished in the top three spots of their respective events and two athletes, Von Dixon and Edward Sands, set new Evangel records.

Dixon ran the final heat in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.98 seconds and placed second. He broke Zack Ruble’s record of 8.03 seconds, which was set at the same meet in 2006.

Sands lengthened the 11-year-old long jump record at Evangel by 2.5 inches. He placed second in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 7.5 inches. Edwards actually broke the mark twice as he had the same length in the preliminary round. Edwards surpassed the previous record of 21-5, set by John Dollar at Missouri Valley in 1996.

Lady Crusaders placing third or higher were Taylor Viles and Amanda Zgrablich. Viles won the triple jump event with a distance of 30-feet, 1l.0-inches. She tied for second place in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 9 inches. Zgrablich covered the 1000-meter run in 3 minutes, 36.09 seconds and placed second. She finished third in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:52.00.

In addition to the record-setting performances of Dixon and Sands, in the 55-meter hurdles and long jump, respectively, several Evangel men finished their events in third place or higher.

Sands finished second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.53 seconds. James Kerr ran the same race in 6.77 to finish third. Jon Fouch finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.29 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Jon Bundrick placed second with a time of 54.89 seconds. Fouch ran the 400 in 55.31 to place third. Nick Reasor had a time of 2 minutes, 7.8 seconds in the 800-meter run and placed third. Erik Hinkle ran the 1000-meter event in 2 minutes, 58 seconds to finished second.

Garrett Gretz represented the Crusaders well in the field events, winning the shot put event. He heaved the shot 47 feet, 5.7 inches in the preliminary round and again in the finals to take first place.

Up next for the Evangel track and field team is the Fazolis/Baymont Inn Invitational at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin on Jan. 25-26.
