Four men’s records were set - one was an NAIA automatic-qualifying mark - and several personal records were established at the Fazoli’s/Baymont Inn Missouri Southern Open Invitational on Jan. 25-26. The meet host was Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

Von Dixon and Edward Sands continued to shatter Evangel’s short-distance and long jump marks and Garrett Gretz added 11.5 inches to his previous school record in the shot put.

Sands ran his preliminary race in the 60-meter dash in 7.02 seconds to set a new school record. He finished third in the finals of the 60 (7.05). Sands broke Justin Skaggs’ record of 7.07 seconds set in 2001 at the same meet.

Dixon placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 8.66 seconds. He broke the previous record by .01 seconds. Zach Ruble held the previous 60-meter hurdles record with a time of 8.67 seconds, set at Iowa State in 2005. Dixon also broke the school mark in the long jump, a record that was set last week by Sands at Missouri Valley. Dixon lengthened Sands’ record by 2.75 inches, jumping 21-feet, 10.25 inches for the new EU mark. Sands’ prior record was 21-7.5.

In the field events, Gretz not only broke his own school record in the shot put, but also secured an automatic berth into the NAIA national indoor meet. Gretz hurled the shot a record 51-feet, 7.0 inches. His previous school standard was 50-7.50, which he accomplished twice in 2006.

Others setting new personal records were Jon Bundrick (24.11, 200 meters and 54.50, 400 meters), Jon Fouch (23.65, 200 meters and 53.77, 400 meters), John Hunt (23.87, 200 meters), James Kerr (23.75, 200 meters), Colton Moos (55.94, 400 meters) and Joel Stevens (7.40, 60 meters).

The Lady Crusaders were led by Kim Pasche and Amanda Zgrablich. Pasche qualified for the final round of the 60-meter hurdles and finished fifth with a time of 10.75 seconds. She also ran the 400-meter dash and placed sixth with a time of 1:05.36, which is her second quickest 400. Pasche ran a 1:05.08 at the Heart of America Athletic Conference meet last season. Zgrablich ran her first 600-yard race at Evangel and placed third with a time of 1:40.92.

In addition to Gretz’ NAIA automatic-qualifying distance in the shot put, Dixon has a provisional-qualifying time for the 60-meter hurdles and Sands for the 60-meter dash at the NAIA national meet. The meet will be held at the Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tennessee, on Mar. 6-8.

The Evangel track and field team’s next meet is on Feb. 7 (women) and Feb. 8 (men) at the University of Central Missouri Mule Relays in Warrensburg.
